Discord Search Tips: Find Anything Fast
Discord's search is powerful but most people only use the basics. Here's how to find anything quickly.
Basic Search
Click the ๐ search icon in the top right of any server (or use Ctrl+F on desktop) to open search. By default, it searches the current server.
Search Operators (Filters)
Use these operators to narrow results dramatically:
| Operator | Example | What it finds |
|---|---|---|
from: | from:username | Messages from a specific user |
mentions: | mentions:username | Messages that mention a user |
has: | has:link or has:image or has:file | Messages with links, images, or files |
before: | before:2024-01-01 | Messages before a date |
after: | after:2024-01-01 | Messages after a date |
during: | during:2024-01 | Messages during a specific month |
in: | in:general | Messages in a specific channel |
pinned: | pinned:true | Only pinned messages |
Combining Operators
Combine multiple operators for precise results:
from:username has:image in:media-channel after:2024-06-01
This finds images posted by that user in that channel after June 2024.
Finding Specific Content
- Find a file someone shared:
has:file from:username - Find all invite links:
has:link discord.gg - Find an old announcement:
in:announcements before:2024-12-01 [keyword] - Find messages mentioning you:
mentions:me
Message Pinning vs. Search
For frequently referenced content, pinning is better than relying on search:
- Right-click any message โ Pin Message
- Access pins: click the ๐ icon at the top of any channel
DM Search
Search works in DMs too:
- Open any DM conversation
- Use
Ctrl+For the search icon - Search that specific conversation
As a server owner, good content is findable content. Organised servers with pinned guides and searchable history attract and retain members - list yours on Discords.ai.
