Discord Forum Channels: Setup and Best Practices

Forum Channels give every conversation its own thread โ€” perfect for organised communities that need structured discussion.

What Are Forum Channels?

A Forum Channel is a special channel type where:

  • Every post is automatically a separate thread
  • Posts can be tagged and sorted
  • You can require a post template (guidelines for what to include)
  • Posts can be marked as answered or closed

When to Use Forum Channels

  • Support/Help โ€” Each question gets its own thread; staff answer once and close
  • LFG โ€” Each group search is its own post with tags for game, rank, region
  • Feedback & Suggestions โ€” Structured suggestions with voting
  • Showcase โ€” Each creation gets its own spotlight
  • Job Board โ€” Structured listings with category tags

Creating a Forum Channel

  1. Click + next to a category
  2. Select Forum Channel
  3. Name it and add a topic/description
  4. Configure:
- Tags โ€” Create categories for posts (e.g. Open, Answered, Bug, Feature) - Post Template โ€” Add placeholder text guiding what to include - Sort order โ€” Recent activity or latest posts - Slowmode โ€” Limit post frequency if needed

Setting Up Tags

Go to channel settings โ†’ Tags to add:

  • Status tags: Open, Answered, Closed, In Progress
  • Category tags: Bug, Suggestion, Question, Review
  • Priority tags: Urgent, Low Priority

Mods can apply and change tags. Optionally allow members to tag their own posts.

Forum Channel Moderation

  • Set a post template so every submission has the right information
  • Enable "Require tag" so posts must be tagged before posting
  • Give mods permission to close threads when resolved
  • Archive old/inactive threads periodically

Forum channels elevate your server's professionalism. Include them as a feature in your Discords.ai listing.
