How to Set Up an LFG (Looking for Group) Channel on Discord

An LFG channel helps members find teammates quickly โ€” one of the most valuable features for any gaming server. Here's how to set it up properly.

Option 1: Simple Text Channel

The easiest approach โ€” create a #lfg channel and pin a post format:

Game: Valorant
Rank: Gold - Platinum
Roles: Duelist, Initiator
Region: NA East
Looking for: 1 more for ranked grind
Contact: DM me or reply here

Pros: Simple, no bot needed Cons: Gets messy fast; old posts clog the channel

Option 2: Discord Forum Channel

Forum channels are perfect for LFG because each post is its own thread:

  1. Create a Forum Channel in your game category
  2. Add tags: Rank, Region, Game Mode, Team Size
  3. Set a post template with the fields members should fill out
  4. Enable the "New posts only" feed view
  5. Archive old threads after 48 hours automatically

Forum channels are the best modern approach for active servers.

Option 3: LFG Bots

Several bots specialise in LFG matchmaking:

  • Looking for Group Bot โ€” Dedicated LFG commands with region/rank filtering
  • GameTrack โ€” Tracks game stats and integrates with LFG
  • Paimon.moe (for Genshin) โ€” Game-specific matchmaking

Best Practices

  • Create separate LFG channels per game if your server covers multiple games
  • Add a #lfg-rules or pinned message explaining the format
  • Use slowmode (30-60 seconds) to prevent spam
  • Encourage members to update their posts when the group is full
  • Mod-only ability to delete old/unfilled posts

Role Integration

Create a @LFG or game-specific ping role that members can self-assign. When someone posts in LFG, they can ping it to notify people actively looking for a group.
