How to Delete a Discord Server (Step-by-Step Guide)

Deleting a Discord server is permanent and cannot be undone. This guide walks you through the process and explains what to consider before you make the final decision.

Before You Delete

Consider these alternatives first:

  • Transfer ownership if someone else wants to continue running it
  • Archive the server by removing invite links and setting channels to read-only
  • Back up important content — export or screenshot important messages, resources, or templates

āš ļø Once deleted, the server, all channels, messages, and roles are gone forever. Discord cannot restore deleted servers.

Who Can Delete a Server?

Only the server owner can delete a Discord server. Admins and moderators cannot delete a server, only the original creator (or whoever ownership was transferred to).

How to Delete a Discord Server (Desktop)

  1. Open Discord and go to your server
  2. Click the server name at the top of the channel list to open the dropdown menu
  3. Click "Server Settings"
  4. Scroll to the very bottom of the left sidebar
  5. Click "Delete Server"
  6. Type your server's name exactly as shown in the confirmation box
  7. Click "Delete Server" to confirm

Your server is now permanently deleted.

How to Delete a Discord Server (Mobile)

  1. Open the Discord app and navigate to your server
  2. Tap the three dots (⋯) next to the server name at the top
  3. Tap "Settings"
  4. Scroll to the bottom and tap "Delete Server"
  5. Type the server name to confirm
  6. Tap "Delete Server"

What Happens After Deletion?

  • All members are automatically removed
  • All invite links immediately become invalid
  • All message history and channels are permanently erased
  • Roles, emoji, and server settings are all lost
  • Any bots in the server are disconnected

If You Don't Have Access to Delete

If you're not the server owner but want a server removed:

  • Ask the server owner to delete it
  • If the server violates Discord's rules, report it at dis.gd/report

Starting Fresh

If you're deleting one server to start a new community, take time to plan your new server properly. Check out resources on Discords.ai to see what successful servers look like and how they're structured.
