How to Back Up Your Discord Server
A server can be raided, misconfigured, or accidentally broken. Backups give you a recovery option. Here's how to create them.
What You Can (and Can't) Back Up
Can back up:
- Channel and category structure (via Server Template)
- Role names and colours
- Basic permissions structure
- Bot configuration (via bot dashboards)
Cannot back up:
- Message history (Discord doesn't allow bulk message export)
- Member lists (privacy compliance)
- Invite links
- Some bot data
Creating a Server Template (Structure Backup)
- Go to Server Settings → Server Template
- Click Generate a Template
- Name it (include the date: "My Server Backup 2025-01")
- Copy the template URL and save it securely
If your server structure is destroyed or you want to clone it:
- Create a new server
- Paste the template URL in a browser
- The structure is recreated instantly
Update your template monthly or after major server changes.
Bot Configuration Backups
For each bot, export or document your configuration:
- Carl-bot: Take screenshots of your dashboard settings
- MEE6: Note your automod rules and level rewards
- Dyno: Document your automod and command settings
Some bots allow configuration export — check their dashboards.
Documentation Backup
Keep a private document with:
- All bot invites and permission levels
- All role descriptions and permissions
- Your server rules (full text)
- Staff contact information
- Key channel descriptions
Recovery Plan
If your server is compromised:
- Remove compromised admin accounts immediately
- Kick/ban malicious members using a bot's ban command
- Use your backup template to rebuild structure if needed
- Re-add bots using saved invite links
- Restore rules and documentation from your docs backup
A secure, well-backed-up server is worth promoting on Discords.ai.
