How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Discord
Two-factor authentication (2FA) prevents hackers from accessing your account even if they know your password. Here's how to set it up.
Why 2FA Matters
Discord accounts are prime targets for hackers because:
- Server owners' accounts control entire communities
- Discord Nitro has real monetary value
- Compromised accounts are used to spread phishing links
With 2FA, a thief needs your phone as well as your password โ making account theft practically impossible.
Setting Up Authenticator App 2FA (Recommended)
- Download an authenticator app: Authy (recommended) or Google Authenticator
- Open Discord โ User Settings โ My Account
- Click Enable Two-Factor Auth
- Open your authenticator app โ Add Account โ Scan QR Code
- Scan the QR code Discord shows you
- Enter the 6-digit code from your app to confirm
- Save your backup codes โ store them securely somewhere offline
Backup Codes
Backup codes let you access your account if you lose your phone:
- Discord provides 10 one-time backup codes
- Store them in a password manager or print and store physically
- Download new codes: Settings โ My Account โ View Backup Codes
Server-Wide 2FA Requirement
As a server owner, you can require all staff to have 2FA:
- Server Settings โ Safety Setup
- Enable Require 2FA for moderator actions
- Moderators without 2FA will be unable to take moderation actions
This is essential for servers with multiple staff members.
If You Lose Access
If you lose your phone and backup codes:
- Submit a support ticket to Discord
- Provide account verification information
- Discord support can remove 2FA after identity verification
A secured account is a trustworthy server owner. Enable 2FA before listing your server on Discords.ai.
