Discord Server Limits: Channels, Members, Roles & More

Discord has limits on how large and complex a server can be. Knowing these limits helps you plan your server structure before hitting a wall.

Core Server Limits

Boost Level Perks

Server Boosts from Nitro members increase your server's capabilities:

  • Go Live at 384 kbps audio
  • 100 MB uploads for all members

User Account Limits

| Feature | Limit | |---|---| | Servers per account (free) | 100 | | Servers per account (Nitro) | 200 | | Friends list | 1,000 | | Message length | 2,000 characters | | Bios | 190 characters |

Channel Limits

| Feature | Limit | |---|---| | Thread archive duration | 1 hour, 24 hours, 3 days, 1 week | | Active threads | 1,000 per server | | Message history | Indefinite (no pruning by default) |

Bot Limits

| Feature | Limit | |---|---| | Bots per server | 250 (practical limit varies) | | Slash command response time | 3 seconds before timeout | | Embeds per message | 10 | | Embed fields | 25 per embed |

Planning Around Limits

If you're building a large community:

  • Plan your channel structure early — 500 channels sounds like a lot but fills up fast with categories
  • Manage roles carefully — 250 is generous but role stacking can get complex
  • Encourage boosts to unlock more emoji and better streaming quality
