How to Deal With Trolls on Discord

Trolls are a fact of life on Discord. Handling them quickly and consistently protects your community culture.

Types of Discord Trolls

  • Spammers - Flood channels with repeated messages or copypasta
  • Provocateurs - Post inflammatory content to bait reactions
  • Impersonators - Pretend to be staff or other members
  • Raider - Part of a coordinated attack on your server
  • Persisters - Return with alt accounts after banning

The Golden Rule: Don't Feed Them

Trolls want attention. The best moderation is fast, silent, and impersonal:

  1. Don't argue - No warnings, no explanations in public chat
  2. Delete immediately - Remove the content before members react to it
  3. Timeout or ban quietly - Don't announce the action publicly
  4. Move on - Redirect conversation back to normal topics

Preventive Measures

Verification gates:

  • Require phone verification or a verification bot before members can type
  • Set verification level to Medium (must have a verified email and be registered for 5+ minutes)

AutoMod rules:

  • Block common slurs and profanity
  • Block links from non-trusted members
  • Flag repeated messages as spam

Slow mode:

  • Enable slowmode (15-60 seconds) in high-traffic channels
  • Reduces spam effectiveness significantly

Escalation Steps

  1. Delete the offending content
  2. Apply a Timeout (1 hour for first offence)
  3. If they return and continue: Kick
  4. If they return again or if the violation was severe: Permanent ban
  5. If they're using alt accounts: Enable highest verification level + report to Discord

Reporting to Discord

For severe harassment or CSAM:

  • Use the in-app report feature
  • Go to discord.com/safety
  • For legal emergencies, Discord cooperates with law enforcement
