How to Moderate NSFW Content on Discord
NSFW channels require extra care. Here's how to set them up properly and keep them compliant with Discord's policies.
Discord's NSFW Rules
- NSFW content is only allowed in channels marked as Age-Restricted (NSFW)
- Server owners must ensure NSFW channels are not accessible to minors
- Certain content is never permitted, regardless of channel type: CSAM, real-person non-consensual content, content glorifying violence
- Community servers (discovery-eligible) cannot have NSFW channels at all
Marking a Channel as Age-Restricted (NSFW)
- Click the gear icon on the channel โ Edit Channel
- Scroll to Age-Restricted Channel
- Toggle it on
- Save changes
NSFW channels show a warning to users and require them to confirm their age before viewing. Discord's age verification is at the account level.
Access Control
Don't rely solely on Discord's built-in age confirmation:
- Create a
Verified 18+role - Require members to DM a mod or complete a form to get it
- Set NSFW channel visibility to
Verified 18+role only - Document your age verification process for compliance
NSFW Channel Rules to Post
๐ NSFW Channel Rules
- You must be 18+ to view or post here
- All content must be legal in your country and ours
- Real person NSFW content is strictly prohibited
- CSAM = permanent ban + report to Discord and law enforcement
- Credit original artists when sharing art
- No linking to piracy or illegal content sites
Moderation Practices for NSFW Channels
- Assign dedicated mods to NSFW channels โ not everyone is comfortable moderating this content
- Review the channel daily, not just when flagged
- Set slowmode (30-60 seconds) to prevent flooding
- Use image-scanning bots where available for illegal content detection
