How to Set Up a Discord Ban Appeal System
Every large server makes moderation mistakes. A clear appeal process protects your community's reputation and gives members fair recourse.
Why You Need an Appeal System
- Wrongful bans happen - appeal systems correct them
- Shows members your moderation is fair and accountable
- Reduces resentment from moderation decisions
- Gives your team a documented process to follow
Option 1: Google Form Appeals
The simplest approach:
- Create a Google Form with these fields:
- Link the form in your server's rules or announcement channel
- Set up email notifications when a form is submitted
- Review weekly and respond via DM
Option 2: Appeals Discord Server
For larger servers:
- Create a separate Discord server for appeals
- Add a bot that creates a private ticket for each appeal
- Assign a senior mod team to review tickets
- Decisions are documented in a closed channel
The Review Process
- Acknowledge receipt - Let the appellant know within 48 hours
- Gather evidence - Check mod logs, message history, audit log
- Team review - At least 2 mods review each appeal
- Decision - Uphold, reduce, or overturn the ban
- Communicate - Inform the appellant of the decision and reasoning
Decision Guidelines
- Minor rule violations with genuine remorse → Reduce ban duration or overturn
- Severe violations (doxxing, NSFW, harassment) → Uphold
- Evidence of rule misunderstanding → Overturn with clear warning
- Repeat offender → Uphold
Include your appeal link in your Discords.ai listing to show prospective members that your server is fairly run.
