How to Train New Discord Moderators
Untrained mods create more problems than they solve. Here's a training programme that actually works.
Week 1: Observation (Shadow Period)
New mods should watch before they act:
- Grant access to all staff channels but no mod permissions yet
- Have them read the full moderation handbook (see below)
- Ask them to observe how current mods handle situations
- Daily check-in: "What did you observe today? How would you have handled it?"
Week 2: Supervised Action
Grant basic permissions (warn, timeout) with oversight:
- New mods take action and explain their reasoning in the staff chat
- Senior mods review every decision and give feedback
- Calibration exercises: present scenarios and ask "what would you do?"
Week 3-4: Independent Trial
Full basic mod permissions with lighter supervision:
- Still check in weekly
- Review their mod log entries for consistency
- Address any patterns of over- or under-moderation
The Mod Handbook
Every server should have a written mod handbook covering:
- Community rules and how to interpret them
- Punishment escalation guide (strikes system)
- When to escalate to senior mods or admins
- How to use each moderation tool
- Scripts for common situations (handling trolls, drama, reports)
- What to do if you're not sure (ask, don't guess)
Common Training Mistakes
- Giving admin access immediately โ always start restricted
- Not having a probation period โ you learn who someone is under pressure
- No feedback after decisions โ mods don't improve without it
- Treating mods as unpaid labour โ recognise and appreciate their work
