Discord Moderator Burnout: Prevention and Recovery
Moderator burnout is one of the leading causes of server decline. If your mods are burning out, your community will suffer. Here's how to address it.
Signs of Moderator Burnout
- Mod is less active than usual without explanation
- Slower response times to incidents
- More irritable or inconsistent moderation decisions
- Expressing frustration about the role publicly
- Asking to step down or taking long unexplained breaks
Causes of Burnout
- Being on-call 24/7 with no coverage
- Dealing with the same types of violations repeatedly
- No recognition or appreciation
- Drama and conflict between staff members
- Feeling like their input is ignored
- No end to the workload
Prevention: Sustainable Moderation Practices
1. Scheduled shifts Assign mods to specific coverage windows instead of expecting everyone to be always available. 4-6 hours of coverage per day per mod is healthy.
2. Rotation for heavy channels NSFW moderation, ban appeals, and report queues are emotionally draining. Rotate who handles these weekly.
3. Time-off policy Make it explicit that mods can take breaks:
- 1 week off per month is reasonable
- Long-term leave (vacation, health) should be available without pressure
4. Recognition
- Thank mods publicly in staff channels
- Give special roles or perks
- Ask for input on major decisions โ they're invested in the community
5. Limit drama exposure Don't force mods to engage with every piece of drama. Assign a primary handler and let others opt out.
Recovery: Helping a Burned-Out Mod
- Have a private, non-judgmental conversation
- Offer immediate reduced responsibilities
- Find out what's causing the strain
- If they need to step down, let them โ gracefully
- Don't pressure them to stay if they need to leave
