How to Structure Your Discord Moderation Team
A good moderation team is the backbone of any large Discord server. Here's how to build one that works.
The Moderation Hierarchy
Trial Moderator
- New staff on probation (2-4 weeks)
- Can warn and mute members
- Has view access to staff channels
- Closely supervised by senior mods
Moderator
- Passed probation
- Can warn, mute, kick, and temp-ban
- Handles day-to-day moderation
- Participates in staff discussions
Senior Moderator
- Experienced, trusted mods
- Can permanent ban
- Trains trial mods
- Handles escalated situations
Admin
- Manages the moderation team
- Sets policy
- Handles appeals and disputes
- Can manage server settings
How to Recruit Moderators
Look for members who:
- Have been active for 3+ months
- Are consistently helpful and positive
- Handle disagreements calmly
- Are online during off-peak hours
- Have never needed to be moderated themselves
Don't promote:
- Friends you trust personally but who don't meet the above
- Anyone who asks or campaigns for the role
- Members who are active but have a history of drama
Staff Onboarding
- Provide a written moderation guide
- Shadow sessions โ new mods observe before acting
- Clear escalation guidelines (when to handle vs. when to escalate)
- Regular staff meetings (weekly or biweekly)
Keeping Mods Motivated
- Publicly recognise good moderation decisions
- Give mods meaningful input into server decisions
- Create a healthy staff culture โ burnout is real
- Regularly ask: "What would make your role easier?"
A well-run server with great moderation is worth showcasing โ list it on Discords.ai and mention your active staff team in your description.
