The Complete Wiki to Discord's 20MB File Upload Limit

Discord just doubled its free upload limit.

Files up to 20 MiB now work for free users, bots and webhooks.

Here is what changed and what it means for your uploads. πŸ“

πŸ“ Note: Discord says it is still experimenting with limits, so some accounts may see slightly different numbers.

What Changed in the Discord Upload Limit

Discord raised the default upload limit from 10 MiB to 20 MiB for users, bots, webhooks and interaction responses. The developer changelog dates the API change to September 3, 2026.

The limit applies to each file, not the whole message.

Key fact: 20 MiB is about 21 million bytes, slightly more than 20 MB.

What It Means for Free Users

Free accounts can now upload files twice as large as before. Images over the limit are shared as a download instead.

Discord also fixed a mobile quirk. The app used to compress your file first and warn you only if it was still too big. It now checks size before compression, like desktop, so the number you see is the number that counts.

Still too big? Trim clips, lower the resolution or compress the file before uploading.

Need more room? Nitro Basic reaches 50MB and full Nitro reaches 500MB.

What It Means for Bots and Webhooks

Bots

Bots get the same 20 MiB default per file. Nitro does not help bots, so larger limits come from the server's Boost tier.

Oversized uploads can be rejected with an HTTP 413 error, so validate size first. Log the limit your bot sees, so you can spot server differences.

Webhooks

Webhooks now follow the same 20 MiB per file rule. Messages still allow up to 10 attachments and 2,000 characters of content.

One embed tool caps total attachments near 24.5 MiB per message, but Discord's docs only state the per file rule, so test large multi file posts.

How to Update Your Bot or Webhook

πŸ› οΈ Quick Update Flow

πŸ”Ž 1. Find any hard coded 10 MiB limit in your code

πŸ“ 2. Read attachment_size_limit from interactions when available

↓

βœ‚οΈ 3. Check each file's size before uploading

↓

πŸ›‘οΈ 4. Handle rejection errors gracefully

Do not hard code 20 MiB either. Discord is still experimenting, so limits can change.

FAQ

What is Discord's free upload limit now?

20 MiB per file, up from 10 MiB. Some accounts may see different numbers while Discord experiments.

Is MiB the same as MB?

No. One MiB is 1,048,576 bytes, so 20 MiB is slightly bigger than 20 MB. See the mebibyte definition.

Does Nitro help my bot?

No. Nitro limits apply to users, not bots. A bot's limit depends on the server's Boost tier.

Does the limit apply to each file or the whole message?

Each file. Discord's docs say the limit applies to every file in a request.

Can I upload bigger files without Nitro?

Yes, in a boosted server. Boost Tier 2 allows 50 MiB and Tier 3 allows 100 MiB.

Where can I read the official announcement?

Read the developer changelog for the API change, and the support article on file attachments for the user side.
