For years, the best answers in gaming lived inside Discord servers, where Google couldn't see them. That's about to change. Discord says it will start putting Discord messages on Google and other search engines, beginning in mid-December 2026.
It only applies to large public servers, and usernames won't be shown. But the setting is on by default in most countries, so if you chat in big communities, it's worth knowing how it works.
Here's what's changing, what stays private, and how to opt out in under a minute.
At a glance - Announced: 27 October 2026 - Affects: Discoverable Servers only (1,000+ members, at least 8 weeks old) - 16 November: every Discoverable Server gets a public web page with AI summaries - Mid-December: messages from public channels can appear in web search - Not affected: DMs, group DMs, private servers and private channels - Opt out: User Settings > Data & Privacy
🔍 Discord Messages on Google: What Is Changing?
Discord announced the change in a blog post on 27 October. Its goal is to make useful information easier to find, like game tips and troubleshooting answers that are "buried" in chats.
There are three parts to it:
| Feature | What it is | Starts |
|---|---|---|
| Server Web Pages | A public page for each Discoverable Server, with a description and a Join button | 16 November 2026 |
| Channel Summaries | AI-written summaries of active public conversations, shown on the server's web page | 16 November 2026 |
| Channel Messages | Members' actual messages from public channels, shown on the web and in search | Mid-December 2026, rolling out over a few weeks |

Discord says usernames and avatars won't appear next to messages or in summaries. Product manager Kelsey Duncombe-Smith told PC Gamer: "Usernames and avatars will not be shown alongside these messages."
🏠 Which Servers Are Affected?
Only Discoverable Servers. According to Discord, these are public servers that:
- Have at least 1,000 members
- Are at least eight weeks old
- Meet Discord's activity and safety requirements
Digital Trends reports there are over 63,000 of them.

Community Servers, smaller servers and invite-only servers are not included.
🔒 What Stays Private?
Discord says these are "always private and not included":
- DMs and group DMs
- Private servers
- Private channels, like role-restricted channels
- Private threads and private forums
- Messages sent before mid-December 2026
- Messages from teen accounts, which can't turn the setting on
Channels that can appear on the web get an icon in the channel header, and you'll see a pop-up before posting in one for the first time.
✋ How to Stop Your Discord Messages Appearing on Google
- Open User Settings.
- Select Data & Privacy.
- Turn off Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages.

A few things to know:
- One switch covers every server you're in, including on mobile. You change it on desktop or in a browser.
- It only affects future messages. Messages sent while it was on can still appear. To remove one, delete it.
- It doesn't cover Channel Summaries. Only server admins can turn those off.
- Google may keep copies. Deleted messages vanish from Discord's pages, but search engines have their own caches.
For more ways to lock down your account, see our Discord privacy settings guide.
🌍 Is It On by Default?
Yes, in most countries. It's off by default if your account is in:
- The EU and EEA
- The UK
- Canada
- Brazil
- Australia
- South Korea
That means users in places like the US and India need to switch it off themselves if they don't want their messages shown.
🛠️ What Server Owners Can Do
Admins control this in Server Settings > Web Presence. They can:
- Pick which channels feed Channel Summaries and Channel Messages, separately
- Turn either feature off for the whole server
- Edit their Server Web Page
If you do nothing, public channels are included by default. The only way to remove the web page completely is to stop being Discoverable.
For owners, this is also a big chance to be found on Google. A strong description helps, so read our guides on writing the perfect Discord server description and making your server stand out on directories.
🤖 Is Discord Selling Messages to AI?
Discord says no. Its help centre states: "No. Nothing has changed." It adds that it's making content "easier to find if admins and users choose to make their content available on the web."
Discord does confirm that Channel Summaries are written by AI, and warns they "may not always be accurate."
Not everyone is convinced. Digital Trends called the privacy questions "obvious," saying searchable conversations raise "some uncomfortable privacy questions."

🎮 The Bottom Line
Discord messages on Google could make finding game fixes and guides much easier. But it also means chats in big servers are no longer just for the people in the room.
If you'd rather keep your messages off the web, flip the switch in Data & Privacy before mid-December. It takes 10 seconds.
Will you keep the setting on, or turn it off?
