๐ฉธ The Complete Wiki to Gears of War: E-Day
Every Gears of War game has referenced Emergence Day. None of them have actually shown it, until now. E-Day takes players back to the single worst 24 hours in the franchise's history, and does it with a tone the series hasn't touched since the original 2006 game.
๐ฐ๏ธ Fourteen Years Before It All Began
E-Day is a direct prequel, set fourteen years before the events of the first Gears of War.
Instead of the hardened veterans fans have known for two decades, players get Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as young soldiers. They've just returned home from the Pendulum Wars when the ground literally opens up beneath them.
The story follows young COG veterans Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they fight to survive the invasion in the city of Kalona alongside fellow soldiers Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes, forming Bravo Squad amid the collapse of civilization.
Kalona is a brand new location for the series. It gives The Coalition a fresh city to tear apart, rather than revisiting places players already know the fate of.
๐จ Back to Horror, Not Just Action
Gears of War has always had horror DNA buried in it. E-Day is the first entry built to bring that back to the surface.
- Reimagined enemies designed to restore genuine fear and dread
- A darker, grittier tone across the entire campaign
- Terrified civilians and massacred bodies scattered through early missions, establishing the human cost before the shooting even starts
- A slower, more desperate opening built around survival rather than firepower
Hands on previews of the campaign describe smoke still hanging in the air from the night before, with blood and gore staying visibly splattered across weapons, armor, and the screen itself for extended periods rather than fading instantly.
๐ฎ New Combat Systems
The cover based shooting that built the franchise is still here. It's just been pushed harder.
- Destructible cover that gradually wears down the longer a fight drags on
- Characters now hug the ground as cover crumbles, rather than simply getting pulled out when it breaks
- Prone shooting, a first for the series
- New weapons including the Gutpuncher grenade launcher and the Incinerator shotgun
๐ฅ Where the Lancer Actually Comes From
This is the detail longtime fans have been waiting for. The chainsaw equipped Lancer, arguably the most iconic weapon in gaming, didn't always exist. E-Day shows exactly how it got built.
Following a massive battle in a grocery store that saw survivors use a regular chainsaw as an improvised weapon, the cogs appeared to start turning in the heads of Marcus Fenix and his squad. Thus, the original chainsaw Lancer is born.
The idea traces back further than the game itself. The Coalition has confirmed the concept was inspired by the 2008 novel Gears of War: The Aspho Fields, where soldier Tai Kaliso improvises with a power saw in combat, an idea that eventually became the weapon fans know today.
๐ฅ๏ธ Rebuilt Entirely in Unreal Engine 5
E-Day isn't running on upgraded old assets. The Coalition rebuilt the game from scratch.
๐๏ธ 1. Foundation โ Fully rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, no legacy assets
โ
๐ก 2. Lighting โ MegaLights system, shipping for the first time here
โ
๐ 3. Atmosphere โ Dynamic shadows built specifically for horror pacing
โ
๐ฅ 4. Combat โ Next generation destruction and gore systemsArt director Aryan Hanbeck has directly tied the new lighting tech to the horror tone, describing the goal as being able to move between light and dark, into scarier spaces, with dynamic shadows in a way the older engine simply couldn't support.
On the technical side, the campaign targets 4K with hardware accelerated ray tracing at 60fps, while multiplayer pushes up to 120fps, with native HDR10 rendering across both modes.

๐Do I need to have played the original Gears of War trilogy to understand E-Day?
No. Since it's set fourteen years earlier with younger versions of Marcus and Dom, E-Day is built as an origin story, meaning new players can start here without needing prior knowledge of the original games' events.
