π΅οΈ What Is the Path Tracing Update?
007 First Light received its Path Tracing and DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction update on September 15, 2026. The feature was originally planned around the game's launch but arrived later as a dedicated update.
Path Tracing improves the game's:
- Lighting
- Shadows
- Reflections
- Global illumination
- Ambient occlusion
IO Interactive says the technology integrates directly into its Glacier engine.

β³ Why Was It Delayed?
Path Tracing required additional development and optimization work.
IO Interactive had to integrate technologies including RTX Path Tracing, RTX Global Illumination, Opacity Micro-Maps and DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction into Glacier.
The final update launched several months after the game's May 2026 release.

π₯οΈ RTX 50-Series Requirements
The standard version of 007 First Light can run on a much wider range of hardware, but the Path Tracing mode has substantially higher requirements.
Current reported targets include:
| Target | GPU | Resolution | Settings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry PT target | RTX 5070 | 1080p / 60 FPS | Medium |
| Higher resolution | RTX 5080 | 1440p / 60 FPS | Medium |
| High-end target | RTX 5090 | 4K / 60 FPS | High |
These Path Tracing targets use DLSS technologies to help maintain performance.

β‘ DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction
The update also adds DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction.
It is designed to reconstruct path-traced lighting information more effectively, helping preserve image quality while reducing the visual noise associated with real-time path tracing.
DLSS Frame Generation is supported but isn't required on the recommended hardware.
π Performance
Path Tracing comes with a substantial GPU performance cost.
Independent testing on an RTX 5080 found that enabling Path Tracing at 4K with DLSS Balanced could reduce average performance by roughly 62%, illustrating how demanding the mode is.
IO Interactive has also acknowledged performance issues following the update and said it is working with NVIDIA on improvements.

π― Quick Summary
007 First Light Path Tracing = Better lighting + heavier GPU requirements.
The September 2026 update brings fully path-traced visuals to PC, with RTX 5070, RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 positioned around 1080p, 1440p and 4K performance targets respectively.
