The Complete Wiki to Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault

Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault is the sequel to 2018's cult hit Moonlighter. It comes from developer Digital Sun and publisher 11 Bit Studios.

The game launched into Early Access on November 19, 2025. It reached its full 1.0 release on September 2, 2026.

Moonlighter 2 launched across a wide platform spread. It's available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The Switch 2 version is a notable shift for the series. The original Moonlighter ran in 2D with a top down camera. Its sequel is fully 3D, viewed from an isometric angle.

That's a big technical leap for a handheld platform. Reviewers have called it a strong fit for the Switch 2's improved hardware.

๐ŸŒ€ The New Dimensional Dungeon System

The story picks up after the first game's ending. Will and the people of Rynoka were invited into a trade agreement between dimensions.

That peace doesn't last. A multiversal conqueror named Moloch seizes control of the dimensions explored in the first game, stranding Will and his friends in a new town called Tresna.

From Tresna, Will rebuilds his shop and sets out through unpredictable dimensional biomes at night. Each dimension is randomized on every run, giving the game a genuine roguelike structure the original never had.

Combat Changes

Will now carries a gun alongside one of four melee weapon types. The gun's ammo recharges through melee attacks. That design choice rewards aggressive, close range play instead of pure ranged kiting.

Relics and Backpack Synergies

Exploration rewards Will with ancient relics. Each relic grants a unique combat bonus or modifier.

Managing the backpack is a core skill, not just inventory management. Certain relics synergize with each other when placed together, triggering extra effects and unlocking stronger builds.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Expanded Shopkeeper Economics

By day, Will returns to Tresna and reopens his shop, the Moonlighter. He sells the relics gathered from the previous night's run to eager townsfolk.

That's where the game's central mystery box comes in.

A strange device called the Endless Vault appears in the center of town. It compels Will to keep earning gold from customers, offering rare upgrades and story progression in return.

As sales climb, the Endless Vault reaches milestones. Each one unlocks new upgrades for the shop and the town itself, tying economic progress directly to narrative progress.

Between runs, Will can also upgrade weapons, drink potions for temporary boosts, and pick up side quests from Tresna's cast of villagers, giving the day cycle more to do than simple shopkeeping alone.

๐Ÿ“Š Critical Reception

Moonlighter 2 launched to a Metacritic score of 76, described as "Generally Favorable."

Reviewers have consistently praised how the sequel expands on the original's loot and sell loop while adding real roguelike depth. Some noted that players who spent significant time in Early Access may find the full 1.0 release doesn't add a huge amount of new content on top of what they'd already experienced.

โ“ Do I need to have played the original Moonlighter first?

No. The sequel is designed as a fresh entry point, with Will and the townsfolk starting over from scratch in a new town after losing everything from the first game, so newcomers can jump in without prior knowledge of the original's story.
