How to Organise Game Nights on Discord
Game nights build community bonds and keep your server active. Here's how to run them so people actually show up.
Step 1: Choose the Right Games
Not all games work for group events. The best game night games are:
- Party games โ Jackbox, Among Us, Skribbl.io (no purchase required for guests)
- Free-to-play โ Valorant, Apex Legends, Fortnite, Fall Guys
- Widely owned โ Minecraft, CS2, GTA V
- Short session length โ Games you can play in 30-90 minutes
Poll your community before each game night with simple reactions.
Step 2: Schedule Strategically
- Pick a consistent day and time (e.g. every Saturday 8pm EST)
- Check your server analytics to see when members are most active
- Avoid scheduling during major gaming events or patch days
- Post the schedule at least 3 days in advance
Step 3: Create the Event in Discord
- Click the + next to Events in your server
- Choose Voice Channel as the location
- Set the date, time, and description
- Add a cover image for visual appeal
- Set it to repeat weekly if it's a recurring event
Members can click Interested to get notified when it starts.
Step 4: Promote the Event
- Ping a
@Game Nightrole (opt-in) when the event is posted - Post a reminder 1 hour before start
- Share in relevant game channels to catch members browsing those sections
- Mention it in your Discords.ai server listing to attract event-loving members
Step 5: Run the Night
- Start on time โ Waiting too long loses momentum
- Designate a host โ One person keeps things moving
- Use a lobby voice channel โ Gather everyone before sorting into game rooms
- Keep energy high โ React, cheer, and celebrate big moments
- Take screenshots โ Post highlights in
#mediaor#game-night-recap
Step 6: Follow Up
- Post a recap with highlights and attendance
- Ask for feedback on what to play next time
- Recognise standout performers (funniest moment, best play, etc.)
