Discord Voice Channel Tips and Tricks

Voice channels are where real community bonds form. Here's how to get the most out of them.

Audio Quality Settings

User Settings โ†’ Voice & Video:

  • Input Mode: Choose Voice Activity (always-on) or Push to Talk
  • Input Sensitivity: If using Voice Activity, adjust the threshold so background noise doesn't trigger it
  • Noise Suppression: Enable Krisp (Discord's built-in noise suppressor) to eliminate background noise
  • Echo Cancellation: Enable if you hear your own voice
  • Attenuation: Automatically lowers other apps' volume when someone speaks

Push to Talk Setup

Push to Talk is better for noisy environments:

  1. Settings โ†’ Voice & Video โ†’ Input Mode โ†’ Push to Talk
  2. Set your activation keybind
  3. Adjust Push to Talk Release Delay to ~20ms for natural conversation
  4. Enable in the Keybinds section for system-wide activation

Voice Channel Etiquette Tips

  • Mute yourself when not speaking in large calls
  • Use Push to Talk in gaming sessions to avoid transmitting game audio
  • Enable Priority Speaker in your role for event hosts
  • Use the Deafen button when you need to focus

Server-Side Voice Settings

As a server admin, set per-channel:

  • Bitrate โ€” Higher = better quality (64kbps default, up to 384kbps with Nitro boosts)
  • User Limit โ€” Cap the number of people who can join
  • Video Quality โ€” Set to 720p or 1080p for stream quality

Useful Voice Features

  • Camera โ€” Share your webcam in voice channels
  • Soundboard โ€” Play short sound effects (Server Settings โ†’ Soundboard)
  • Activities โ€” Play games directly in voice channels (Watch Together, Poker Night, etc.)
  • Stage Channel โ€” Speaker/audience separation for large events

A server with active, well-configured voice channels is a stronger community. List yours on Discords.ai.
