How to Use Discord Go Live (Stream to Your Server)

Go Live is Discord's built-in game streaming feature. Here's how to set it up and use it.

Starting a Go Live Stream

  1. Join a voice channel in your server
  2. Click the screen icon at the bottom ("Share Your Screen")
  3. Select Application to share a specific game
  4. Set stream quality (720p30 free; 1080p60 with Nitro)
  5. Click Go Live โ€” a stream preview appears in the voice channel

Viewer Limits

  • Free: Up to 50 concurrent viewers
  • Nitro: Up to 50 viewers (same limit, but higher quality)
  • Stage Channels: No viewer limit for audio; Go Live capped at 50 for video

For events with more than 50 viewers, use Stage Channels for audio or move to a platform like Twitch.

Stream Quality Settings

  • 720p 30fps โ€” Free tier, fine for most casual streaming
  • 1080p 60fps โ€” Requires Nitro, dramatically smoother for gaming
  • Source quality โ€” Matches your desktop resolution exactly

Inviting Viewers

  • Anyone in the voice channel can click the stream preview to watch
  • Ping a notification role when you go live
  • Use Discord Scheduled Events to announce streams in advance

Connecting Twitch/YouTube

For external streams, connect your account:

  1. Server Settings โ†’ Integrations โ†’ connect your streaming platform
  2. Configure it to post automatically when you go live
  3. Members in the server see a notification

Go Live Best Practices

  • Announce 10-15 minutes before you start
  • Keep a text channel open alongside the voice channel for chat
  • End streams cleanly โ€” don't just close Discord; click End Stream first

Regular streams build community bonds โ€” mention them in your Discords.ai listing to attract members who value live content.
