Discord Community Server vs Regular Server: What's the Difference?
Discord offers two main server types: regular servers and Community servers. Enabling Community mode unlocks powerful features but comes with requirements. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is a Regular Discord Server?
A regular server is the default when you create a server. It's great for:
- Friend groups
- Small private communities
- Gaming groups
- Closed organizations
Regular servers have no special requirements and fewer restrictions.
What Is a Discord Community Server?
A Community server is a special mode you enable in Server Settings. It's designed for growing, public-facing communities. Enabling it unlocks:
Exclusive Community Features
| Feature | Regular | Community |
|---|---|---|
| Server Discovery | ❌ | ✅ (with requirements) |
| Announcement channels | ❌ | ✅ |
| Stage channels | ❌ | ✅ |
| Forum channels | ❌ | ✅ |
| Welcome screen | ❌ | ✅ |
| Member screening | ❌ | ✅ |
| Server Insights analytics | ❌ | ✅ |
| AutoMod (advanced) | ❌ | ✅ |
Requirements to Enable Community Mode
To enable Community, your server must:
✅ Have a verified email for the owner account ✅ Enable 2FA for server moderation ✅ Set a rules or guidelines channel ✅ Set a community updates channel (for Discord announcements) ✅ Meet Discord's Community Guidelines ✅ Enable explicit media content filter (at least for non-members)
Announcement Channels Explained
Community servers can create Announcement channels. Messages posted there can be "followed" by other servers - so communities can subscribe to your announcements and receive them in their own channels. Great for news and update feeds.
Server Discovery
If your Community server has 500+ members and meets quality standards, you can apply for Discord's built-in Server Discovery. This puts you in front of millions of Discord users browsing for servers.
Alternatively, list your server on Discords.ai regardless of size - it's one of the most active Discord server directories available and open to any public server.
Should You Enable Community Mode?
Enable Community if:
- You're building a public or growing community
- You want access to forum channels and stage channels
- You want server analytics to track growth
- You want to appear in Server Discovery
Keep regular mode if:
- Your server is private (friend group, team)
- You don't need the extra features
- You want to avoid the requirements
How to Enable Community Mode
- Go to Server Settings → Enable Community
- Discord walks you through the requirements
- Complete each step (verification, rules channel, etc.)
- Click "Enable Community"
