The Ultimate Guide to Dark Souls 2 Seamless Co-Op

Dark Souls 2 Seamless Co-op is a free PC mod created by Yui, the modder behind popular seamless co-op mods for Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 3, Elden Ring Nightreign and Armored Core VI.

Released on September 22, 2026, after about a year and a half of development, it lets friends play Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin together throughout the entire game.

What the Mod Does

Dark Souls 2's original co-op system is famously restrictive. Summons are sent home after bosses, and sessions end when players die.

According to DSOGaming, the mod changes that:

  • Up to six players: The host plus five others
  • Persistent sessions: Deaths no longer end co-op, and players respawn at their last bonfire
  • No forced exits: Defeating bosses or clearing areas doesn't send players home
  • Fewer barriers: Fog walls and other multiplayer limits are removed
  • Synced world: NPC dialogue and world events stay synchronized
  • Shared resets: Resting at a bonfire resets the world for everyone
  • Carried progress: Co-op progress carries over to each player's own world
  • Easy joining: Players can join the host from anywhere and quickly rejoin after disconnects

The mod also overhauls Dark Souls 2's peer-to-peer connections using Steam's newer networking API.

Mod Items

The mod uses special in-game items to manage sessions. As listed in Yui's release post:

  • Pharros' Heliograph: Host a seamless session
  • Fragment of Brilliance: Join as a friendly player
  • Fragment of Malevolence: Invade as a hostile player
  • Obscuring Stone: Leave a session

Extra Features

  • Proximity chat: Optional voice chat for co-op partners and invaders, according to GamesRadar
  • Restored cosmetics: Server-timed exclusive items from the original game return
  • Death penalty mechanic: A new system discourages abusing the fact that deaths don't reset the world
  • Quality-of-life fixes: General improvements to make the game smoother to play

Requirements

  • Game: Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, version 1.03
  • Platform: PC (Steam)
  • Every player: Must install the mod

โš ๏ธ Important: The original 32-bit Dark Souls 2 is not supported. As PCGamesN notes, the mod only works with the 64-bit Scholar of the First Sin edition.

How to Set Up the Mod

  • Back up your save: Always make a copy before installing
  • Download: Get the mod free from Nexus Mods or GitHub
  • Follow the official guide: Read the install instructions and known issues on the download page
  • Remove Blue Acolyte: It's incompatible, and its fixes are already built into Seamless Co-op
  • Check settings: Review the mod's settings file, including options like proximity chat
  • Match versions: Make sure everyone uses the same game and mod version
  • Start a session: The host uses Pharros' Heliograph, and friends join with a Fragment of Brilliance

๐Ÿ’ก Note: The mod is in alpha. Yui says players shouldn't expect a flawless or bug-free experience, and the current release is meant to gather feedback and bug reports. Compatibility with other mods hasn't been tested.

Why It Matters

Dark Souls 2 has long been considered the most awkward FromSoftware game for co-op. This mod finally makes a full campaign with friends practical, more than a decade after the game's release. It does make the game easier, though, which some purists may dislike.

๐ŸŽฎ The Bottom Line

Dark Souls 2 Seamless Co-op brings six-player, uninterrupted co-op to Scholar of the First Sin. It's free and packed with features, but it's still in alpha, so back up your saves and expect some bugs.
