VOLTA Malware Steals Discord Tokens, Then Asks AI How Much You're Worth

Most malware steals your passwords and dumps them in a pile. VOLTA malware goes a step further. After it grabs your Discord token, Gmail session and gaming logins, it hands everything to an AI model and asks it to work out who you are and what you're worth.

Cisco Talos revealed VOLTA on 31 October 2026, and security sites picked it up over the weekend. For Discord users, the worrying part is simple: a stolen token can let someone into your account without your password.

Here's what VOLTA does, why gamers are in its sights, and the steps that actually protect you.

At a glance - What it is: a Windows infostealer that deletes itself after running - Found by: Cisco Talos, report published 31 October 2026 - Discord risk: steals your Discord token and uses it to learn more about you - Also targets: Gmail, Steam, Roblox, Battle.net, Telegram, browser passwords, crypto wallets - The AI part: sends stolen data to AI models to profile and rank victims - How it spreads: not yet known

🦠 What Is VOLTA Malware?

VOLTA is an infostealer, a type of malware built to quietly copy logins, cookies and personal data from your PC. Talos found it through CAIRN, a research effort that hunts for hacking tools using AI. The sample it studied was first seen on 11 October 2026.

Talos hasn't said how VOLTA reaches victims. Infostealers usually arrive as files you're tricked into running, such as a "free game", a cheat or a fake app.

What makes VOLTA different is what happens after the theft. Talos researcher Ryan Fetterman summed it up: "The model is the operator's triage analyst," he wrote, according to Security Boulevard.

🎮 What VOLTA Steals

According to Talos and Cyber Security News, VOLTA collects a long list of data:

Category What it takes
Discord Your Discord token, which it reuses to fill out your account profile
Browsers Saved passwords, cookies and payment cards from Chrome-based browsers and Firefox
Email Your logged-in Gmail session, used to search receipts from Amazon, DoorDash, Uber Eats, Walmart and PayPal to confirm your home address
Gaming Steam, Battle.net and Roblox logins, with Roblox items priced through a live lookup
Other apps Telegram, Slack, Outlook and Thunderbird
Everything else Crypto wallets, saved Wi-Fi passwords and SSH keys

Talos says much of the cookie and token theft relies on getting around App-Bound Encryption, a protection Chrome added to stop exactly this kind of attack.

🤖 How VOLTA Uses AI to Rank Victims

Once the theft is done, VOLTA writes what it found into a file called Identity_Report.txt. It then sends that report to an AI model through OpenRouter, a service that connects to many different models.

The prompt tells the model to act as "a forensic intelligence analyst drafting a target assessment," according to Cyber Security News. The model writes back a profile with two telling sections:

  • "WHAT THEY'RE WORTH", which rates the victim's valuables as low, medium or high.
  • "THEIR OPSEC", which judges how careful the victim is with passwords and security.

Talos says VOLTA tries Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.6 first. If the model refuses, it falls back to Moonshot AI's Kimi K2, then Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash. None of the AI companies had commented in the coverage so far.

The finished report goes to the attacker through Telegram. Fetterman called the goal "effort displacement": the AI does the analysis so the criminal doesn't have to.

🔑 Why a Stolen Discord Token Matters

A Discord token is the key your app uses to stay logged in. Whoever has it can act as you.

Cyber Security News notes that stolen sessions like this can get around passwords and sometimes two-factor prompts. That's why infostealers love Discord: one token can mean access to your DMs, your servers and, for server owners, every channel you manage.

Hijacked accounts are then often used to spread the same scam to friends, usually as a "game to test" or a free Nitro link. Our guide to the fake giveaway epidemic shows how these messages look.

🛡️ How to Protect Your Discord Account From VOLTA Malware

Before anything happens

  1. Don't run files from strangers. Discord warns that malicious files often pose as "games" or "free Nitro".
  2. Turn on multi-factor authentication, or better, add a passkey. It won't stop a stolen token, but it blocks the much more common password theft.
  3. Keep Windows Defender or another antivirus on, and keep Chrome updated.
  4. Don't store crypto seed phrases in plain text on your PC.

If you think you've been infected

  1. Use a clean device, such as your phone, for the next steps. Talos advises resetting passwords and revoking tokens from a machine you trust.
  2. Reset your Discord password and make sure multi-factor authentication is on. This is Discord's own first recommendation.
  3. Check Authorized Apps in User Settings and deauthorize anything you don't recognise.
  4. Scan your PC. Discord suggests a Windows Defender scan.
  5. Change your Gmail, Steam and other passwords too, and sign out of other sessions where those services let you.
  6. Move any crypto to a new wallet if its seed phrase was saved on the infected PC.
  7. Report it at dis.gd/hackedaccount if someone has already used your account.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is VOLTA malware?

VOLTA is a Windows infostealer found by Cisco Talos. It steals logins and tokens, then uses AI models to profile and rank its victims.

Does VOLTA malware steal Discord accounts?

It steals your Discord token, which can let an attacker act as you. Talos says VOLTA reuses the token to gather more details about your account.

How do I know if I have VOLTA?

Talos says VOLTA leaves a log file called volta_debug.txt in your AppData folder. If in doubt, run a full antivirus scan and follow the steps above from a clean device.

Does 2FA protect me from VOLTA?

Not fully. A stolen session token can sometimes get around two-factor prompts. Still keep 2FA on, because it blocks most other attacks.

How does VOLTA spread?

Talos hasn't said. Treat unexpected downloads, "games to test" and free Nitro links as suspicious.

🎮 The Bottom Line

VOLTA malware shows where infostealers are heading: steal everything, then let AI decide who's worth targeting. For Discord users, the defence is still the basics. Don't run strange files, use passkeys or 2FA, and act fast from a clean device if something feels off.

Have you ever been sent a "game to test" on Discord?
