Dragon Age's Black City: The Mystery That Still Hangs Over The Veilguard
Few locations in Dragon Age carry as much mystery as the Black City.
Floating impossibly in the Fade, the corrupted city has been part of the series' mythology since the beginning. It sits at the center of some of Thedas' biggest questions: the origins of the Blight, the ancient elven gods, the Veil and the true history of Solas.
That makes it particularly interesting after Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
But despite recent speculation around a supposed "Black City" DLC, there is currently no official announcement from BioWare confirming such an expansion, a surprise weekend launch or a new campaign centered on the Black City. BioWare's official Veilguard news archive does not list such an expansion.
What we do have is a much deeper mystery.
And it may be one of the biggest unresolved pieces of Dragon Age lore.

🌑 What Is the Black City?
The Black City is an enormous structure located within the Fade, the mysterious realm that exists alongside the physical world of Thedas.
It was once known as the Golden City.
According to Chantry tradition, the Golden City was a divine place associated with the Maker. The story says that mortal mages eventually entered the city and corrupted it, turning it black.
But Dragon Age has never treated that explanation as simple fact.
Different characters, cultures and historical sources provide contradictory accounts of what actually happened.
That uncertainty is important because the Black City sits at the intersection of religion, ancient history and the origins of the Blight.
The game series has repeatedly shown that what the people of Thedas believe about their history is not necessarily what actually happened.
🧩 The Black City and the Evanuris
The Black City became even more important once Dragon Age's ancient elven history began to come into focus.
The Veilguard reveals more about Solas and the Evanuris, the powerful elven beings who were worshipped as gods.
Solas' ancient actions are directly connected to the creation of the Veil and the imprisonment of the Evanuris.
The game's revelations fundamentally change how players can interpret the Black City's history.
Rather than being simply a mysterious religious location, it becomes connected to the ancient events that shaped the entire world.
The city's corruption is also connected to the Blight, making it one of the most important pieces of the puzzle surrounding ancient Thedas.

🧙 Solas Changes Everything
Solas is arguably the character most closely associated with the modern interpretation of the Black City's history.
Before The Veilguard, players already knew that Solas was far more than the quiet elven apostate he initially appeared to be.
He was Fen'Harel, the Dread Wolf, and one of the most important figures in ancient elven history.
His decision to create the Veil changed Thedas forever.
The Veil separated the Fade from the physical world, but it also trapped the Evanuris and the Blight in an ancient prison.
That history makes Solas central to understanding why the Black City exists in the state that players know today.
It also creates a fascinating contradiction.
The people of Thedas have spent thousands of years interpreting the Black City through religion and mythology, while Solas knows what actually happened.
🩸 The Black City and the Blight
The Black City is also deeply connected to one of Dragon Age's defining threats.
The Blight has caused some of the worst disasters in Thedas, producing the darkspawn and triggering multiple Blights throughout history.
The traditional story says that ancient Tevinter magisters entered the Golden City and transformed it into the Black City, returning to the physical world as the first darkspawn.
But later Dragon Age revelations complicate that story.
The Veilguard provides additional context surrounding the Evanuris, Solas and the ancient origins of the Blight.
That means the Black City isn't simply a creepy location sitting in the background.
It represents a potential missing chapter in the history of the entire world.

🏙️ Why Players Still Want to Visit It
One of the biggest unanswered questions is surprisingly simple:
Can players actually explore the Black City?
Across the Dragon Age games, the city has remained distant and mysterious.
It can be seen from within the Fade, but actually reaching it has traditionally been treated as extraordinarily difficult.
That makes it an obvious candidate for future storytelling.
Imagine an RPG sequence that allowed players to move through the corrupted city itself, explore its architecture and discover what remains inside.
It could potentially provide answers about:
- The origins of the Blight
- The Evanuris
- The Veil
- The Fade
- Solas' ancient actions
- The history of the Golden City
- The true nature of the Maker
But none of that means BioWare has announced such a location as a playable DLC area.
At this point, it remains a compelling possibility for future Dragon Age storytelling, not a confirmed expansion.
⚔️ The Veilguard's Solas Storyline
The Veilguard places Solas at the heart of its opening conflict.
Rook and Varric are attempting to stop Solas from completing a ritual that threatens to tear down the Veil.
The ritual fails, but its consequences unleash the game's larger conflict.
This establishes Solas as one of the game's central figures from the very beginning.
The story then explores his history, his relationship with the ancient elves and the consequences of the choices he made thousands of years earlier.
That is why the Black City remains such an interesting piece of the story.
Even when players are not physically inside it, the consequences of its history are everywhere.

🕯️ Why a Black City DLC Would Make Sense
Although no Black City DLC has been announced, it is easy to understand why the rumor keeps coming back.
The location is one of the biggest remaining mysteries in Dragon Age.
It has existed in the franchise's mythology for years without receiving the kind of direct exploration that fans have wanted.
A future story set there could potentially answer questions that have survived across multiple games.
It would also be a natural way to explore the deeper consequences of the ancient elven storyline introduced throughout the series.
But there is an important distinction between "this would make sense" and "BioWare is making it."
Right now, only the first statement can be supported.
🧠 The Real Story Behind the Rumor
The supposed surprise DLC is a good example of how quickly Dragon Age speculation can turn into apparent fact online.
The ingredients are all real:
The Black City is real.
Solas is connected to its ancient history.
The Blight is connected to its story.
The Veilguard reveals major new information about ancient Thedas.
But the leap from those facts to a Saturday DLC launch called Black City is not supported by an official announcement.
BioWare's current public information does not confirm such a project.
That distinction is especially important for a story this lore-heavy.

🔮 What Happens Next?
For now, the future of Dragon Age remains uncertain.
BioWare's January 2025 studio update said that the team was turning toward the future and preparing for its next chapter, with the studio shifting resources toward the next Mass Effect project.
That doesn't mean Dragon Age is permanently finished.
It simply means there is currently no confirmed Black City expansion to review or announce.
If BioWare eventually returns to the Black City, however, it has one of the strongest unresolved locations in the entire franchise waiting for it.
And after everything The Veilguard revealed about Solas and the Evanuris, players have more reasons than ever to want to see what's actually inside.
🔗 Official Dragon Age Information
Want to follow confirmed Dragon Age announcements instead of relying on DLC rumors? BioWare's official Dragon Age pages are the best place to check for new game information, updates and announcements.
Official Dragon Age: The Veilguard Website
This is the official EA page for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, so it is a much better external link for that article and is currently working.
BioWare's official The Veilguard archive also contains the studio's published news and announcements for the game.
This is the kind of external link I'll keep adding to future blogs: one genuinely relevant, authoritative source rather than a collection of random links.
🎮 The Bottom Line
The Black City remains one of Dragon Age's greatest mysteries, but there is currently no confirmed The Veilguard DLC called Black City, no verified Saturday surprise launch and no official expansion that concludes the Solas storyline.
What makes the location interesting is everything we already know.
Its history is tied to the Fade, the Blight, the Evanuris, Solas and some of the oldest mysteries in Thedas.
The Veilguard gave players more information about that history, but it also created even more questions.
And if BioWare ever decides to let players finally walk through the gates of the Black City, it could be one of the most important stories the Dragon Age universe has ever told.
Would you want a future Dragon Age expansion to finally let players explore the Black City?
