Scroll through any busy server's member list and you'll spot them: names sitting on top of meadows, galaxies, cat paws and, this month, witch's eyes. Those are Discord nameplates, and they've quietly become one of the most visible ways to stand out on the app.
Unlike avatar decorations, which only show around your profile picture, a nameplate follows your name wherever you're listed. Halloween and Dead by Daylight drops have made them more popular than ever.
This guide covers what nameplates are, where people see them, what they cost, how to equip one and what to do if yours isn't showing.
At a glance - What: a decorative, animated backdrop behind your display name - Where: member lists, your DM list and your User Settings bar - How to get one: buy it in the Discord Shop, or unlock one in a limited event - Price: varies by collection; Discord valued a recent one at $5.99, and Nitro members get discounts - Who sees it: everyone, but only while you're online
🏷️ What Are Discord Nameplates?
Nameplates are Shop items that change how your display name looks. Discord describes them as "unique designs that let you customize how your display name appears on Discord."
They launched in the Shop on 22 April 2025 with eight designs inspired by popular collections, including Cyberpunk, Galaxy and Anime styles. Since then, most new Shop collections have included at least one nameplate.

Here's how nameplates compare with Discord's other cosmetics:
| Item | Where it shows |
|---|---|
| Nameplate | Behind your name in member lists, DMs and your settings bar |
| Avatar decoration | Around your profile picture |
| Profile effect | Over your profile card when someone opens it |
Badges are the other way to stand out, and many are free. See which Discord badges you can still get in 2026.
👀 Where People See Your Nameplate
Your nameplate appears in three places:
- Server member lists, including channel and thread member lists
- Your DM list and group chats, when someone hovers over or selects your name
- Your User Settings bar, in the bottom-left corner

Everyone can see it, with one catch. Discord says "Nameplates show when you are active on Discord," so they disappear when you're offline or set to Invisible.
💰 How Much Do Nameplates Cost?
Prices vary by collection, and Discord doesn't publish one fixed price. As a guide, Discord valued the free Hex Eyes nameplate from its Halloween event at $5.99.
A few things affect what you pay:
- Nitro members get Shop discounts, including on nameplates. Our Discord Nitro vs free comparison covers what else Nitro includes.
- Localised pricing applies in some countries, and the final price shows at checkout.
- Orbs can buy some items from Discord's main Shop collections, but not partner-branded items. Each item shows whether it can be claimed with Orbs.
Nameplates are non-refundable, so preview them before you buy.
🛒 How to Get a Nameplate
Buy one from the Shop
- Open the Shop from the Shop tab above your server list.
- Browse to a collection and select a nameplate to preview it.
- Buy it for yourself, or use the gift option to send it to a friend.
Discord's Shop FAQ, updated on 1 October 2026, says mobile users can now "preview and buy Avatar Decorations, Profile Effects, Nameplates, and more."
Unlock one in an event
Discord sometimes gives nameplates away. During Halloween 2026, collecting four items from the Cauldron Chaos collection unlocked a free Hex Eyes nameplate. That offer ended on 21 October, but similar promotions tend to come back with big events. Our guide to Discord Quests and free Orbs covers other free cosmetics.
Look out for partner drops
Game collections often include several nameplates. The Dead by Daylight drop on 14 October added six, including three colours of Scratch Marks.

On mobile:
- Tap your avatar in the bottom right.
- Tap Edit Profile.
- Open the Nameplate menu, choose one, tap Apply, then Save.
Everything you buy stays in your collection, so you can swap to a different nameplate from the same menu whenever you like.
🔧 Nameplate Not Showing?
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nobody can see my nameplate | You're offline or Invisible | Set your status to Online, Idle or Do Not Disturb |
| It isn't animating | Reduced Motion is on | Check User Settings > Accessibility |
| I can't find the item I wanted | Shop items rotate | Wait for the collection to return, or check the Shop again later |
| I don't see Nameplates at all | Old app version | Update Discord and restart |
You can't turn nameplates off for other people. If animations bother you, Discord suggests turning on Enable Reduced Motion under User Settings > Accessibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Discord nameplates?
They're Shop cosmetics that put a decorative, often animated, backdrop behind your display name in member lists and DMs.
Are Discord nameplates free?
Most cost money in the Shop. Discord occasionally gives one away in events, like the Hex Eyes nameplate during Halloween 2026.
Can other people see my nameplate?
Yes, everyone can see it, but only while you're online. It doesn't show when you're offline or Invisible.
Can I buy nameplates on mobile?
Yes. Discord's Shop FAQ now lists nameplates among the items you can buy on mobile.
Can I get a refund on a nameplate?
No. Discord says nameplate purchases are final and non-refundable.
🎮 The Bottom Line
Discord nameplates are the most visible cosmetic you can buy, because they show up every time someone scrolls a member list. Prices vary by collection, Nitro members pay less, and the occasional event hands one out for free.
If you only buy one cosmetic, a nameplate gets seen the most. Just remember it only shows while you're online.
Have you picked up a nameplate yet, or are you waiting for a free one?
