How to Set Up a Welcome Channel on Discord

The welcome channel is often a new member's first impression of your community. Make it count.

What to Include in a Welcome Channel

Essential elements:

  1. Greeting โ€” Warm, friendly introduction to the community
  2. What you are โ€” 2-3 sentences explaining the server's purpose
  3. Next steps โ€” Clear, numbered actions for new members
  4. Key channel links โ€” Point to rules, roles, and the most important channels
  5. Invite link โ€” Make it easy to share

Optional:

  • Server icon/logo as an image
  • Staff team introduction
  • Community values or mission statement

Formatting Template

Automated Welcome Messages

Add a bot auto-welcome for every new member:

Carl-bot:

  1. Dashboard โ†’ Welcomer
  2. Set the welcome channel
  3. Write the message using {user} for the member mention
  4. Optionally include their avatar with the embed builder

MEE6: Similar setup under MEE6 Dashboard โ†’ Welcome.

What to Avoid

  • Walls of text โ€” nobody reads them
  • Too many required steps before they can chat
  • Outdated information (check monthly)
  • Aggressive "read the rules or get banned" tone

New members who have a great first experience become advocates. List your server on Discords.ai and let them find you.
