How to Set Up a Discord Community Mentorship Program
Mentorship programmes create the deepest community bonds possible — here's how to build one that works.
Program Structure
Mentor: Experienced member who guides a mentee Mentee: New or less experienced member seeking guidance Duration: 4-8 week cohorts (with option to continue) Format: Regular check-ins via DM or private voice call
Recruitment
Finding mentors:
- Reach out to your most helpful, experienced members personally
- Post an open application for members with 6+ months experience
- Require: active status, good standing, genuine interest in teaching
Finding mentees:
- Open applications for new or less experienced members
- Require: specific goal they want to achieve in the programme
- Limit to 1.5x the number of mentors you have (ratio: 1 mentor : 1-2 mentees)
Matching Process
Match based on:
- Shared interests/niche
- Complementary availability (timezone, schedule)
- Specific goals the mentee has that the mentor can address
Expectations Document
Provide a written expectations document to both parties:
- Check in at least once per week
- Communicate if you'll be unavailable
- Mentors: listen first, advise second
- Mentees: come with specific questions, do the work
- Both: keep conversations respectful and confidential
Running the Programme
- Kick-off call: introduce matched pairs
- Mid-point check-in: ask both parties how it's going
- End-of-cohort: celebration + feedback
- Graduates: earn a "Programme Graduate" role
A mentorship programme makes your community genuinely valuable — and that's the best thing to mention in your Discords.ai listing.
