How to Manage Discord Notifications (Stop the Pings!)
Discord's notifications can be overwhelming. Here's how to tame them.

- Enable Unread Message Badge - Shows a red dot on the Discord icon
- Enable Taskbar Flashing - Windows taskbar flashes on new messages
- Notification Sound - Choose from Discord's sounds or mute all
Per-Server Notification Settings
Right-click any server icon → Notification Settings:
| Option | What it means |
|---|---|
| All Messages | Notify for every message |
| Only @mentions | Only ping when you're tagged |
| Nothing | Complete silence for this server |
- Suppress @everyone and @here - Ignore mass pings from that server
- Suppress Role @mentions - Ignore role pings you're part of
- Mute server - Temporarily silence all notifications for a set period
Per-Channel Notification Overrides
Right-click any channel → Notification Settings:
- Override the server-level setting for specific channels
- Use case: Mute
#memesbut keep notifications for#announcements
Muting Servers and Channels
To temporarily mute:
- Right-click the server or channel
- Mute Channel (or Mute Server)
- Choose duration: 15 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, or until you turn it back on
Mobile Notifications
On the Discord mobile app:
- Settings → Notifications → configure per-type (mentions, DMs, etc.)
- Set quiet hours to avoid overnight pings
The Ideal Setup
- Your own server(s): All Messages
- Servers you moderate: Only @mentions
- Partner servers: Nothing or Only @mentions
- Large public servers you lurk in: Nothing
With notifications under control, you can focus on what matters - building your community and listing it on Discords.ai.
