Discord Family Center is Discord's opt-in parental control tool. It lets a parent or guardian link their Discord account to a teen's account to see a summary of the teen's activity and manage key safety settings.

It doesn't show message content. Discord says "You will not see what messages your teen has sent, only the users they have messaged." This page covers what Family Center shows, what parents can control, how to connect and its limits.

Requirements

  • The teen's account must be in Discord's Teen age group. Accounts in the Adult age group can't be linked.
  • The parent needs their own Discord account. The Discord mobile app isn't required, and parents can connect on the web.
  • Both sides must opt in. Discord says "Both parents/guardians and teens must voluntarily opt into connecting to Family Center."
  • Changing message requests needs an adult guardian. A guardian must be in the Adult (18+) age group to change that setting.

How to Set Up Discord Family Center

Step 1: The teen creates an invite

  1. Open User Settings.
  2. Go to Account > Family Center.
  3. Select My Family.
  4. Choose Show Code for a QR code, or Copy Link for an invite link.

Step 2: The parent scans or opens it

On mobile:

  1. Tap your avatar at the bottom, then Settings.
  2. Open Family Center and select My Family.
  3. Scan the teen's QR code.

On desktop or browser: open the teen's invite link and send the connection request.

Step 3: The teen accepts

The teen gets a connection request and must accept it. Once connected, the parent opens Family Center > My Family to see the dashboard.

What Parents Can See

Family Center shows activity from the last 7 days, starting from the day the connection was accepted:

  • New friends added or accepted
  • Users the teen messaged or called
  • Total minutes in voice and video calls
  • Top five users and top servers
  • New servers joined or created, and active servers
  • Total purchases, including Nitro
  • Gifts received

Parents also get a weekly email summary, and the teen receives a copy. Discord says the teen and parent "see the exact same information."

What parents can't see

  • Message content in DMs, group chats or servers
  • Activity from before the connection started
  • Which apps the teen is using
  • Details of reports the teen files

What Parents Can Control

Setting What it does
Sensitive content filters Set flagged media to Blur or Block. Guardians can't set it to Show
Friend requests Allow requests from Everyone, Friends of friends or Server members
Server DMs Turn DMs from server members on or off
Message requests Send messages from non-friends to a separate inbox (adult guardians only)
Data & Privacy Manage data-use settings
Monthly spending cap Limit Shop purchases each month, down to $0
Screen Time Limits Schedule downtime when the teen can't use Discord

While linked, the teen can't change these settings themselves. Discord says teens aren't notified when a parent changes a setting.

Spending cap

The monthly cap limits what the teen can spend on Discord each month, but it doesn't apply to subscriptions like Nitro or Server Boosts. If a purchase would go over the cap, it's blocked with an error message.

Screen Time Limits

Parents can schedule downtime, such as school nights. The teen is told when downtime is scheduled and again 15 minutes before it starts. During downtime, Discord shows a message with the time access returns.

What Parents Can't Do

  • Read messages or see message content
  • Remove the teen from servers, DMs or group DMs
  • Change the teen's friend list or joined servers
  • Set sensitive content to Show

For other ways to tighten an account, see our Discord privacy settings guide.

Disconnecting

  • Teens can disconnect at any time. Go to My Family and select the X next to the guardian. Discord says the guardian is "automatically notified via email."
  • Reconnecting means repeating the full connection process, and the teen must accept again.
  • Automatic disconnect: the link ends when the teen's account moves to the Adult age group.

Reports and Safety

When a teen reports a message or user, they can choose to notify a linked guardian. The guardian gets an email that a report was filed, but not its type or content.

Family Center works alongside Discord's default teen protections, such as message requests and blurred sensitive media. Our Discord age requirements guide covers the minimum age to use Discord in each country.

Troubleshooting

Family Center disappeared The teen's account moved to the Adult age group This is expected. Adult accounts can't be linked
A purchase was blocked It hit the monthly spending cap Raise the cap, or wait until it renews
