Discord Emoji and Stickers: Complete Guide

Custom emoji and stickers are among the most beloved features of Discord communities. Here's how to use them fully.

Adding Custom Emoji

  1. Go to Server Settings → Emoji
  2. Click Upload Emoji
  3. Upload a PNG, JPG, or GIF (max 256KB, any resolution - Discord resizes to 32×32 and 48×48)
  4. Give it a name (no spaces - use underscores: cool_face)

Emoji limits:

  • Base server: 50 static emoji + 50 animated emoji
  • Level 1 boost: 100 static + 100 animated
  • Level 2 boost: 150 static + 150 animated
  • Level 3 boost: 250 static + 250 animated

Animated Emoji (GIF)

Upload a GIF as an emoji to get an animated emoji. Animated emoji play for all users in Nitro-boosted servers. Non-Nitro users see a static frame.

Using Custom Emoji

  • Type :emojiname: to trigger the emoji picker suggestion
  • Click the smiley face in the message bar → select your emoji
  • Nitro users can use custom emoji from any server they're in

Creating Great Custom Emoji

Tips:

  • Keep designs simple - they'll be 32×32 pixels
  • Use transparent backgrounds (PNG)
  • High contrast colours read better at small sizes
  • Make inside-jokes and community-specific reactions for your niche

Discord Stickers

Stickers are larger than emoji (320×320) and are sent as standalone messages:

  • Free sticker packs are available in the sticker picker
  • Nitro subscribers get access to all sticker packs
  • Servers can upload custom stickers (60 slots at Level 1, 150 at Level 3)

Adding Custom Stickers

  1. Server Settings → Stickers → Upload Sticker
  2. Upload a PNG, APNG, or Lottie animation
  3. Add a name and description
  4. Assign a related emoji for the sticker suggestion tooltip

Custom emoji make your server feel unique and give members more expressive tools. List your emoji-rich server on Discords.ai.
