How to Launch a Discord Community From Scratch
Most new servers fail not because the idea is bad, but because the launch is rushed. Here's how to do it properly.
Pre-Launch (2 Weeks Before)
Build the server before anyone arrives:
- [ ] Complete channel structure
- [ ] Set up all roles
- [ ] Add and configure bots
- [ ] Write all information channel content (rules, guides, FAQ)
- [ ] Test everything with a friend
- [ ] Create your server icon and banner
- ] Write your listing description for [Discords.ai
Build an audience before launch:
- Create social media accounts
- Post teaser content ("something's coming")
- Build an email list if you have one
- Personally reach out to 20-50 people in your niche who'd be interested
Soft Launch (Day 1)
Don't blast your invite link to everyone at once:
- Invite 10-20 trusted friends or early supporters first
- Have them post, fill channels with conversation, and give you feedback
- Fix any issues they find
- This ensures new members arrive to an active server, not an empty one
Hard Launch (Day 3-7)
Now go wide:
- Announce on social media
- List on Discords.ai and other listing sites
- Post on relevant Reddit communities
- Activate your email list or newsletter
- Ask early members to invite one friend
The First Week is Everything
- Be personally active in every channel
- Greet every single new member by name
- Run at least one event in the first 7 days
- Post daily โ set the tone for what "normal" looks like
Milestones to Aim For
- Day 7: 50 members
- Day 30: 200 members
- Day 90: 500+ members
If you're behind these benchmarks, double down on promotion and engagement โ don't just wait.
