Discord Accessibility Features: Making Discord Work for Everyone

Discord includes a growing set of accessibility features designed to make the platform usable for people with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive differences. This guide covers every accessibility tool Discord offers and how to enable them.

Where to Find Accessibility Settings

  1. Click the gear icon ⚙️ at the bottom left
  2. Select "Accessibility" from the left sidebar

Visual Accessibility

Font Size

Slide the font size adjuster to make text larger or smaller. Larger text improves readability for users with low vision.

Saturation

Adjust color saturation if high-contrast colors are overwhelming or if you have color sensitivity.

Reduced Motion

Enable "Reduce Motion" to minimize animations and transitions throughout the interface. Useful for users with vestibular disorders or motion sensitivity.

Dark/Light Mode

Choose between Dark Mode (easier on eyes in low light) and Light Mode (better contrast for some visual conditions).

Settings → Appearance → Theme

Screen Reader Support

Discord supports screen readers including:

  • NVDA (Windows)
  • JAWS (Windows)
  • VoiceOver (Mac/iOS)
  • TalkBack (Android)

Best practices with Discord + screen reader:

  • Use the desktop app for better screen reader compatibility than the web version
  • Enable keyboard navigation and use Tab to move between elements
  • Use the message input field shortcut: Ctrl+K for quick navigation

Audio and Voice Accessibility

Push to Talk

For users who prefer not to manage a live microphone, Push to Talk lets you transmit audio only when holding a key. Set this in Settings → Voice & Video → Input Mode.

Noise Suppression

Krisp-powered noise suppression removes background noise from your microphone — helpful for users in noisy environments or with audio processing differences.

Voice Activity Sensitivity

Adjust the microphone sensitivity so the bot triggers appropriately for your voice.

Text-to-Speech (TTS)

Discord supports TTS messages. Type /tts [message] to have your text read aloud in a channel that supports it.

Cognitive Accessibility

Compact Mode

Enable compact mode to show more messages with less visual clutter (Settings → Appearance → Message Display → Compact).

Notification Management

Configure notifications carefully to avoid overwhelm:
  • Mute busy servers
  • Set "Only @Mentions" for high-traffic channels
  • Use Do Not Disturb mode when you need focus time

Message Grouping

Discord groups messages from the same user sent close together, reducing visual repetition.

Keyboard Navigation

Discord supports extensive keyboard shortcuts for users who can't or prefer not to use a mouse:

| Action | Shortcut | |---|---| | Navigate between servers | Ctrl + Alt + ↑/↓ | | Navigate between channels | Alt + ↑/↓ | | Mark server as read | Escape | | Jump to oldest unread | Shift + Page Up | | Open quick switcher | Ctrl + K |

See the full list in our keyboard shortcuts guide.

Mobile Accessibility

On the Discord mobile app:

  • Increase system font size (iOS/Android) — Discord respects system font settings
  • Use your device's accessibility features (VoiceOver, TalkBack, Switch Access)
  • Enable display zoom for larger interface elements

Requesting Accessibility Improvements

Discord's accessibility is improving but has gaps. You can:

  • Submit feedback at support.discord.com
  • Vote for accessibility features in Discord's community feedback channels
