Discord Getting Started Guide: Your First Week on Discord

Welcome to Discord! This guide walks you through everything you need to do in your first week — from creating your account to feeling like a pro.

Day 1: Create Your Account

  1. Go to discord.com and click "Open Discord in your browser" or download the desktop app
  2. Click "Register"
  3. Enter your email, display name, username, and password
  4. Set your date of birth (must be 13+)
  5. Verify your email address

Pro tip: Use a real email you check regularly — you'll need it for account recovery.

Day 1: Set Up Your Profile

  1. Click the gear icon āš™ļø at the bottom left
  2. Go to "Profiles"
  3. Upload a profile picture
  4. Add a short bio
  5. Set your display name

Day 2: Join Your First Server

Option A — Direct invite link: If a friend or website gave you a discord.gg link, paste it in your browser or go to Discord → Add a Server → "Join a Server" and paste the invite code.

Option B — Browse public servers: Click the compass icon 🧭 on the left sidebar to open Server Discovery. Browse by category.

Option C — Discover communities: Visit Discords.ai to find active, well-organized servers across gaming, art, music, coding, and more.

Day 2: Learn the Interface

  • Left sidebar — your servers (icons) and DMs
  • Channel list — text and voice channels in the current server
  • Main area — where conversations happen
  • Right sidebar — member list (online members)

Day 3: Communicate Effectively

In Text Channels

  • Type your message and press Enter to send
  • Press Shift + Enter for a new line without sending
  • React to messages with emoji by hovering and clicking the smiley face
  • Reply to a specific message by hovering → clicking the arrow (ā†©ļø)

In Voice Channels

  • Click a voice channel name to join
  • Use the microphone icon at the bottom to mute/unmute
  • Press and hold a key for Push-to-Talk if you prefer

Day 4: Set Up Notifications

Discord notifications can get noisy. Customize them:

  1. Right-click a server icon → "Notification Settings"
  2. Set to "Only @Mentions" for busy servers
  3. Mute channels you don't care about

Day 5: Explore Features

  • Threads — click the # icon in a message to start a thread
  • Emoji & Reactions — hover a message and click 😊
  • Slash Commands — type / in any channel to see available bot commands
  • Markdown formatting — bold, italic, ` code `

Day 6–7: Get Involved

  • Introduce yourself in #introductions channels
  • Ask questions in #help or #general channels
  • Participate in events and activities
  • Follow server rules and be respectful
