The Discord Group DM Limit Is Going Up From 10 Members

Ever had to pick which friend gets left out of the group chat? The Discord group DM limit has been stuck at 10 people for years, and it's one of the most requested changes on the platform.

That's finally changing. Discord says it's "working on expanding the group DM member cap," and dataminers have found code pointing to a new limit of 25 members. There's a catch in the leak, though: only Nitro members may be able to add more than 10 people.

Below is what Discord has confirmed, what has only leaked, and how group DMs work right now.

At a glance - Current limit: 10 members, including you - Confirmed: Discord is working on a bigger cap (16 September 2026) - Reported: a new limit of 25, with Nitro needed to add more than 10 (leak, August 2026) - Status: in development. Discord says an experiment may roll out "soon" - Release date: not announced - New now: you can bulk-leave inactive group DMs

✅ What Discord Has Confirmed

In its 16 September blog post on community-requested features, Discord wrote:

"We're working on expanding the group DM member cap so you'll never have to triage your friends again."

Dexerto reported that Discord also said: "This is still being developed, so you may see an experiment for this rolling out your way soon."

Discord hasn't said what the new limit will be.

🔍 The Leaked Discord Group DM Limit: 25 Members

On 27 August 2026, dataminer Wumpus Central reported that Discord was preparing to raise the limit "from 10 to 25, with the exception that only Discord Nitro members will be able to add more than 10 people."

Treat this as unconfirmed:

• It comes from app code, not an announcement.
• The number could change before launch.
• The Nitro rule could change too, or apply only during testing.

If it ships as leaked, free users would still be able to join bigger groups. The Nitro limit would only affect who can add people past 10.

💬 How Group DMs Work Today

Discord's Group Chat and Calls article says: "Group DMs support up to 10 members total (including yourself)."

To create a group DM on desktop:

1. Open your Friends list from the Discord icon in the top left.
2. Select the New Group DM icon in the top right.
3. Pick your friends, then select Create Group DM.

You need to be friends with someone before you can add them.

🧹 New Now: Bulk-Leave Old Group DMs

While bigger groups are on the way, Discord has already fixed another annoyance. The 25 September update lets you leave several inactive group DMs at once, instead of one by one.

That pairs well with pinned DMs, which landed on desktop in September. Our guide to pinned channels and DMs shows how to keep your favourite chats at the top.

🧠 Group DM vs Server: Which Should You Use?

Until the limit rises, a small private server is the easiest way to chat with more than 10 friends.

The Discord group DM limit is finally moving. Discord has confirmed it's expanding the cap, and a leak points to 25 members with a Nitro requirement to go past 10.

Would you pay for Nitro just to add more friends to a group chat?
