It didn't take long for Marvel's Wolverine players to find something they wanted changed.
Not Wolverine's claws.
Not the combat.
Not even the game's collectibles.
It was the blue, glowing trail that practically grabs Logan by the nose and tells him where to go.
Now, Insomniac is doing something about it.
The latest hotfix reduces the intensity of the game's Scent Trail and Audio Sense indicators, making the effects much less intrusive during exploration.
And while the update doesn't completely remove the system, the studio is also looking into toggleable options for a future update.
The Scent Trail Problem Was Impossible to Miss

Wolverine's enhanced senses are supposed to be one of the defining parts of playing Logan.
The concept makes perfect sense.
Activate his senses, identify a smell or sound, and follow the trail toward an objective or point of interest.
The problem was the presentation.
The Scent Trails appeared as highly visible, glowing paths through the environment. Instead of subtly communicating Logan's heightened senses, the effect could dominate the screen.
Players quickly began criticizing the feature for feeling too intrusive and too eager to tell them where to go.
And the irony wasn't lost on anyone: a character famous for having an extraordinary sense of smell had accidentally created one of the most talked-about visual complaints surrounding the game.
What the New Hotfix Actually Changes

The important thing to understand is that Insomniac hasn't removed Scent Trails.
Instead, the studio has changed how prominently they're displayed.
The latest update reduces the opacity of:
Scent Trail indicators
Audio Sense indicators
That means Logan can still use his enhanced senses.
The difference is that the game isn't shouting about them quite as loudly.
This is a presentation adjustment rather than a fundamental redesign of the mechanic.
Players who simply disliked the visual clutter get a cleaner experience without Insomniac completely removing a system built around Wolverine's abilities.
It's More Than Just a Cosmetic Change

At first glance, reducing opacity might sound like a tiny tweak.
In practice, it addresses the exact part of the mechanic that generated much of the criticism.
The Scent Trail is supposed to represent something Wolverine can perceive that ordinary humans cannot.
A subtle visual language can reinforce that fantasy.
An enormous glowing trail, however, can make the experience feel less like using Wolverine's senses and more like following a GPS route.
That's where the hotfix matters.
Insomniac isn't changing what Logan can detect. It's changing how aggressively the game communicates that information to the player.
For a game built around a character with superhuman senses, that's a meaningful distinction.
The Full Off Switch Still Isn't Here
Here's the catch.
If you were hoping for a menu option labeled "Scent Trails: OFF," this update isn't quite that.
The trails have been toned down, but they're still part of the experience.
However, Insomniac has left the door open.
The studio is continuing to look at ways to improve the Senses system, including the possibility of toggleable options in a future update.
That's potentially the bigger story.
A completely optional system would give players control over how much assistance they want.
Someone who enjoys the visual feedback could leave it enabled.
Someone who wants to investigate environments without constant visual guidance could potentially turn it off.
That kind of flexibility could satisfy both groups without requiring Insomniac to redesign the underlying mechanic.
For now, though, a complete toggle hasn't been confirmed as part of this hotfix.
Insomniac Is Listening — But the Debate Isn't Over
The hotfix also addresses several stability issues and crashes affecting a portion of players.
But the Scent Trail adjustment is clearly the headline change.
And it demonstrates something interesting about modern AAA development.
Games are increasingly launched with enormous amounts of accessibility, guidance and visual feedback built directly into their systems.
The intention is usually understandable: keep players moving, prevent frustration and make important mechanics immediately readable.
But there's a balancing act.
Too little guidance can leave players confused. Too much can make them feel like they're being led by the hand.
Wolverine's Scent Trail controversy sits right in that middle ground.
The hotfix suggests Insomniac recognizes that the presentation was too aggressive for some players.
What Happens Next?
The immediate change is already here: less intense Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators.
The bigger question is whether Insomniac goes further.
The studio is considering toggleable Senses options, but hasn't announced exactly how such a system would work or when it could arrive.
Players should therefore keep an eye on future updates for:
A potential Scent Trail on/off option
Additional changes to the Senses system
Further visual adjustments based on player feedback
More stability and bug fixes
Changes to how much guidance the game provides during exploration
For now, the message is fairly clear.
Insomniac heard the complaints.
It didn't remove Wolverine's enhanced senses.
It simply made them a lot less impossible to ignore.
🎮 The Bottom Line
The Scent Trail isn't gone.
But after the latest hotfix, it doesn't have to dominate the screen anymore.
Insomniac has reduced the intensity of the Scent Trail and Audio Sense indicators while also addressing other launch issues. More importantly, the studio is exploring the possibility of letting players customize or toggle these systems in a future update.
That's a useful middle ground for now.
Players who rely on Logan's heightened senses still have them. Players who found the glowing trails distracting get a quieter experience.
And if Insomniac eventually adds the full toggle fans have been asking for, Wolverine's most divisive visual feature could finally become a matter of player preference rather than a forced part of the presentation.
Have you tried the new, toned-down Scent Trails yet? Do you want Insomniac to add a complete toggle? Let us know in the comments.
