Discord has started rolling out one of its biggest and most controversial safety changes yet.
The platform is now placing users into adult, teen or unconfirmed age groups, with the aim of giving younger users additional protections while keeping the normal Discord experience available to adults.
However, this isn’t quite the same age verification system Discord originally announced earlier in 2026.
Following heavy backlash over privacy, face scans and government ID uploads, Discord delayed its original global rollout and redesigned the system.
The new version relies heavily on Discord automatically estimating whether an account belongs to a teenager or an adult.

Despite those changes, the rollout has already restarted a huge discussion around privacy, incorrect age estimates and whether users should have to prove their age to access certain parts of Discord.
Here’s what is actually changing.
Discord Is Calling It “Age Assurance”
Although most users are calling the feature Discord age verification, Discord officially refers to the overall system as age assurance.
The difference matters because Discord isn't planning to ask every user for an ID or selfie.
Instead, the platform first attempts to automatically determine whether an account most likely belongs to someone aged:
- 13–17
- 18 or older
- Unconfirmed

Your age group is not displayed publicly on your profile and other members of a server cannot see it.
Does Everyone Have to Verify Their Age on Discord?
No.
This is probably the biggest misconception surrounding the update.

Instead, Discord attempts to automatically estimate whether the account belongs to an adult or teenager.
If Discord already places you into the Adult Age Group, you shouldn't need to upload an ID or complete a face scan simply to continue using Discord.
If you're placed into the Teen Age Group, additional safety restrictions are automatically applied.
And if Discord cannot confidently determine your age, your account may appear as Unconfirmed.

How Does Discord Guess Your Age?
This is one of the more unusual parts of the update.
Discord has developed its own age estimation model that attempts to determine whether an account is more likely to belong to a teenager or adult.
According to Discord, signals can include:
- How old your Discord account is
- The servers and communities you're connected to
- Games associated with your account
- General activity levels
- How many servers or channels you're active in
- Broader patterns of account activity

What Happens If Discord Thinks You're an Adult?
If Discord places you into the Adult Age Group, Discord says your normal experience should remain largely unchanged.
Adult users can continue accessing age-restricted servers, channels and settings where those features are otherwise available.
You also shouldn't need to perform another age check simply because the new system launched.

What Changes If Discord Thinks You're a Teen?
Users placed into the Teen Age Group can still use the main parts of Discord.
You can still:
- Message friends
- Join voice calls
- Join normal Discord servers
- Play games with friends
- Participate in non-age-restricted communities
However, several additional protections are enabled.
Age-Restricted Content Is Blocked
Teen accounts cannot access age-restricted servers, channels or bot commands.
Discord's sensitive media systems can also blur or block certain images and videos.
Messages From Strangers Are Restricted
Messages from people who aren't already friends may be moved into Message Requests first.
Discord can also show warnings when a user receives a friend request from somebody with few obvious mutual connections.
Some Profile Information Is More Limited
Discord also changes how broadly certain activity and profile information belonging to teen users is shown.

What Does “Unconfirmed” Mean?
An Unconfirmed account is not necessarily being labelled as a teenager.
It means Discord says it doesn't currently have enough information to confidently place the account into either age group.
Users with unconfirmed accounts can continue using Discord normally for most things.
However, age-restricted content and certain settings remain unavailable until the user confirms they're an adult.

What If Discord Gets Your Age Wrong?
Discord acknowledges that its automatic system will make mistakes.
If you're an adult but Discord places your account into the Teen Age Group — or leaves it unconfirmed — you can manually confirm your age.
Go to:
User Settings → Account Status

You Don't Necessarily Need to Upload an ID
One of the biggest complaints during Discord's original announcement was that users believed they would eventually be forced to provide either a government ID or biometric face scan.

Credit Card
Discord can use possession of a valid adult credit card as an age signal.
Discord says k-ID routes the payment information to Stripe and that neither Discord nor k-ID sees the full card information.

Apple App Store
Apple can share an age range with Discord.
Discord says it receives the age group rather than your exact date of birth.
Google Play
Google Play can similarly provide Discord with an age range.
Google Wallet
Users with an eligible passport-based ID already configured in Google Wallet may be able to use that credential.

AgeKey
Discord also supports AgeKey, a reusable digital age credential that can be stored on your device and used with compatible services.
Video Selfie
Users can still choose facial age estimation.
Discord says its current requirement is that facial age estimation happens entirely on the user's device.
According to Discord, the video does not leave the device and Discord receives only the resulting age estimate.
Government ID
Government ID remains another option.
The process involves scanning a government-issued ID and completing a selfie check to confirm that the document belongs to you.

The UK and Australia Work Differently
There is an important exception to Discord's new automatic age estimation system.

Why Did Discord Delay Age Verification Earlier This Year?
Discord originally announced a much broader age-assurance rollout in February 2026.
The announcement quickly attracted criticism.
Much of the backlash focused on two things:
government IDs and face scanning.
Users questioned why a gaming and communication platform should need potentially sensitive information simply to determine whether somebody was over 18.
The reaction became significant enough that Discord announced on February 24 that it was delaying the broader global rollout until the second half of 2026.

- Greater transparency about third-party providers

In 2025, one of Discord's third-party customer service providers was compromised.

What Are Discord Users Saying?
Reaction to the September rollout has been heavily mixed, although online discussion has leaned negative.
It's worth noting that Reddit threads are not representative polling of Discord's entire user base.
People experiencing problems are naturally more likely to make posts about them.
Even so, the discussions highlight several recurring concerns.
Privacy Is Still the Biggest Concern
Privacy remains the most common criticism.

Even users who never have to verify have raised another question:
How much should Discord be able to infer about you from the way you use the app?

Discord says the update is about creating stronger protections for teenagers while responding to a growing number of age-assurance regulations around the world.

Does Discord Read Your Messages to Work Out Your Age?
According to Discord, no.
Discord says its age estimation model does not analyse the contents of your messages, voice calls or other private conversations.
Instead, it looks at account-level activity and behavioural signals.

Can Other Discord Users See Your Age?
No.
Your Discord age group is not shown publicly.
Server owners, moderators, friends and other Discord users do not receive your exact age through this system.

What Does This Mean for Discord Server Owners?
Server owners should pay attention to the rollout, especially communities using age-restricted channels.
If Discord classifies a member as a teenager or leaves them unconfirmed, that user may no longer be able to access age-restricted areas until they're confirmed as an adult.
Discord also acknowledged earlier in the year that some communities were using NSFW or age-restricted channels for things that weren't actually adult content.

Is Discord Age Verification Mandatory?
It depends on what you mean by mandatory.
You do not currently need to upload an ID or scan your face just to continue using Discord.
Most accounts are supposed to be classified automatically.
And users who remain unconfirmed can continue using the core Discord experience.
However, proving that you're an adult can become effectively required if Discord hasn't automatically confirmed you and you want to access 18+ servers, channels, sensitive content or certain adult-only settings.

Discord's new age-verification system is very different from what users feared when the company first announced its plans in February.

But that hasn't ended the controversy.

But if large numbers of adults find themselves locked out of channels and forced into manual verification, Discord could quickly find itself facing the same backlash that caused it to delay the system earlier this year.
