Balatro 1.1 Update: New Jokers, Vouchers and the Biggest Changes Yet

Balatro 1.1 Update: New Jokers, Vouchers and the Biggest Changes Yet

๐Ÿƒ Balatro 1.1 Is Finally Taking Shape

Balatro fans have been waiting a long time for the game's first major content update, and today brought one of the most substantial looks yet at what version 1.1 could contain.

LocalThunk has been sharing new details through the official Balatro Discord, revealing new Jokers, a new Voucher system, a new gameplay trigger, and changes to Blue Stake.

There is still no release date, but the update is clearly moving closer. Recent developer comments described work on 1.1 as going well, while the latest revelations provide a much better idea of how the update is evolving.

And despite some multiplayer rumors circulating today, 1.1 is not an official multiplayer update.

๐Ÿƒ At Least Four New Jokers Are Coming

One of the biggest reveals is the number of new Jokers.

LocalThunk has now indicated that at least four new Jokers are planned for 1.1, increasing the amount of new build variety coming with the update.

One newly shown Joker is reportedly called Survey.

Its exact gameplay effect has not been fully explained yet, with LocalThunk teasing it in deliberately vague terms.

That is very much in keeping with Balatro's design philosophy.

Jokers can completely change how a run works. A seemingly simple effect can become incredibly powerful when combined with the right deck, Voucher, Tarot card or other Joker.

Adding several more to the pool means players will have another batch of combinations to discover.

โœ‹ A New "Drawn to Hand" Trigger

Perhaps the most interesting mechanical reveal is a new trigger condition:

When a card is drawn to hand.

This gives Jokers another moment at which they can activate.

LocalThunk reportedly used an example called Ace up your Sleeve, which gives +1 Mult when an Ace is drawn to hand.

That may sound small, but it opens up an entirely new design space.

Balatro currently has numerous effects that care about playing cards, discarding cards, scoring cards and other actions.

A dedicated draw-to-hand trigger could make the moment a card enters your hand strategically important.

It could also interact with effects inside Tarot and Spectral packs, according to the latest information.

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Meet the New Lunker Voucher

1.1 is also expanding the Voucher system.

A new Tier 2 Voucher called Lunker has been revealed.

But the more interesting part is how Tier 2 Vouchers will be selected.

The system is being changed to account for the Tier 1 Vouchers players already own without their corresponding upgrades. That means the game can increase the chance of presenting an appropriate Tier 2 Voucher rather than relying entirely on the previous selection process.

This could make Voucher progression feel more intentional during runs.

Instead of simply hoping the right upgrade appears, the new system gives the game more information about which upgrades you have already collected.

๐Ÿ”ต Blue Stake Is Being Reworked

Blue Stake is also getting another look.

Interestingly, LocalThunk reportedly scrapped an earlier version of the Blue Stake rework and replaced it with a different version that he believes fits better.

That is important because Stakes are one of the main ways Balatro increases difficulty without simply adding more content.

A good Stake modifier can completely change how players approach a run.

The exact final Blue Stake changes have not been fully published yet, so this is one area where players will need to wait for the finished update.

โš™๏ธ New Content Can Be Toggled

One particularly useful change is that the new 1.1 content will not necessarily have to be enabled for every profile.

According to the latest developer information, new content such as the additional Jokers and Vouchers can be enabled through a profile checkbox.

Meanwhile, certain balance changes, including Joker and Blue Stake reworks, will apply regardless.

This gives players more control over how they experience the update.

It could also be useful for players who want to keep older strategies or challenge themselves with a more limited card pool.

๐Ÿ† What About Multiplayer?

This is where today's rumors need some clarification.

Balatro does have a thriving multiplayer scene, but the official game itself remains listed as single-player on Steam.

The popular Balatro Multiplayer project is an unofficial community mod that adds real-time multiplayer, ranked matchmaking, tournaments and global leaderboards.

That is likely why claims about a new competitive multiplayer update can sound believable.

However, 1.1 has not been announced as an official multiplayer expansion.

Recent reporting on LocalThunk's latest Discord comments specifically says there is still no official multiplayer announcement.

So there are currently two separate things:

Official Balatro 1.1: New Jokers, Vouchers, triggers and balance changes.

Unofficial Balatro Multiplayer: Community-developed competitive multiplayer with matchmaking and leaderboards.

They should not be presented as the same update.

๐ŸŽฎ Why 1.1 Could Change Balatro

The interesting thing about 1.1 is that LocalThunk isn't simply adding more cards.

The update appears to be expanding the systems that determine how those cards interact.

A new trigger gives Jokers another activation condition.

New Tier 2 Vouchers create additional upgrade paths.

The Voucher selection system is being redesigned around what the player already owns.

Blue Stake is being reworked.

And new Jokers create more possible combinations.

Together, those changes could make the decision-making around each run considerably deeper.

๐Ÿง  The Real Meta Shift

Balatro's greatest strength has always been its ability to turn small interactions into absurdly powerful builds.

That means the impact of 1.1 probably won't come from any single new Joker.

It will come from the combinations players discover after thousands of runs.

A new draw trigger could interact with existing deck manipulation.

A new Voucher could make an underused strategy more attractive.

A reworked Stake could force players to reconsider familiar builds.

And four or more new Jokers add even more possibilities to an already enormous combination space.

That is where the real 1.1 meta will emerge.

โณ When Does Balatro 1.1 Release?

This remains the biggest unanswered question.

There is still no confirmed release date.

LocalThunk previously moved the update away from its original 2025 window and has repeatedly indicated that it will release when it is ready. More recently, the developer has said development is going well and has started sharing more information about the content.

The latest revelations therefore represent a feature preview, not a launch announcement.

Players still need to wait for the finished build.

๐ŸŽฎ The Bottom Line

Balatro 1.1 is shaping up to be much more than a simple collection of new cards.

The latest developer reveals point toward at least four new Jokers, a new Tier 2 Voucher called Lunker, a new "drawn to hand" trigger, and another rework of Blue Stake.

The update still has no confirmed release date, and there is no official confirmation that it introduces multiplayer, asynchronous leaderboards or sabotage mechanics.

That competitive side of Balatro already exists through the unofficial Balatro Multiplayer mod, but it should not be confused with LocalThunk's upcoming 1.1 update.

For now, the biggest question isn't whether Balatro is going competitive.

It's how many completely broken Joker combinations players are going to discover when 1.1 finally lands.
