Discord Timeout vs Kick vs Ban: When to Use Each

Discord gives moderators three main enforcement actions. Each has different effects and appropriate use cases.

Timeout

What it does: Temporarily restricts a member's ability to send messages, join voice channels, or add reactions. They remain in the server and can still read messages.

Duration: 60 seconds to 28 days

Use timeout for:

  • First-time rule violations that aren't severe
  • Members who are being disruptive but not malicious
  • Cooling someone down during a heated argument

Example situations:

  • Member spamming the chat โ†’ 10-minute timeout
  • Two members arguing โ†’ 1-hour timeout for both
  • First offence of a minor rule โ†’ 60-minute timeout with a warning

Kick

What it does: Removes the member from the server immediately. They can rejoin with any valid invite link.

Use kick for:

  • Members who have accumulated multiple warnings
  • Disruptive behaviour without meeting ban-level severity
  • Members who ignore timeouts and continue breaking rules

Ban

What it does: Permanently removes the member and prevents them from rejoining.

Use ban for:

  • Severe rule violations (hate speech, slurs, NSFW in non-NSFW channels)
  • Confirmed raider accounts
  • Members who rejoin after a kick to continue rule-breaking
  • Anyone who doxxes, threatens, or harasses members

The Progressive Discipline Model

| Step | Action | Trigger | |------|--------|---------| | 1 | Warning (verbal) | First minor offence | | 2 | Warning (logged) | Second minor offence | | 3 | Timeout (1โ€“24 hours) | Third offence or moderate violation | | 4 | Kick | Repeated violations | | 5 | Temporary ban | Serious violation | | 6 | Permanent ban | Severe violation |

Exception: Some violations (slurs, doxxing, CSAM, threats) skip straight to immediate permanent ban.
