Discord Onboarding Setup Guide

Discord Onboarding is a guided setup flow that new members complete when they join your server. Done right, it dramatically reduces new member drop-off.

Requirements

  • Your server must have Community mode enabled
  • You must have the Manage Server permission

Accessing Onboarding Settings

  1. Go to Server Settings โ†’ Onboarding
  2. You'll see the Onboarding dashboard with two tabs:
- Default Channels โ€” channels visible to all new members by default - Onboarding Prompts โ€” questions new members answer

Step 1: Configure Default Channels

Keep this list short and welcoming. Recommended defaults:

  • #welcome
  • #rules
  • #announcements
  • #general

Step 2: Create Onboarding Prompts

Prompts are questions you ask new members. Their answers determine which channels and roles they get.

Example prompt:

What games do you play?
- Valorant โ†’ gives 'Valorant' role, shows #valorant channel
- Minecraft โ†’ gives 'Minecraft' role, shows #minecraft channel
- Fortnite โ†’ gives 'Fortnite' role, shows #fortnite channel

Step 3: Set Prompt Type

  • Multiple choice โ€” member picks one answer
  • Multiple select โ€” member picks multiple answers

Step 4: Make Prompts Required

For at least one prompt (ideally your rules acknowledgement), toggle Required. This ensures members can't skip it.

Step 5: Preview and Test

Click Preview to see exactly what new members see. Use an alt account to complete the actual onboarding flow.

Onboarding Best Practices

  • Keep it short: 2โ€“4 prompts maximum
  • Make the rewards visible: Members should see that picking an interest unlocks channels
  • Don't require too much: Stick to interest-based questions
  • Update seasonally: Refresh prompts when your server evolves
