Discord Glossary: 50+ Terms Every User Should Know

New to Discord or just need a quick refresher? This glossary covers the most important terms you'll encounter on the platform.


A–C

Administrator - A role with near-total control over a server, including managing channels, roles, and members.

Audit Log - A record of all moderation and administrative actions taken in a server (bans, role changes, channel edits, etc.).

Bot - An automated account that runs programs inside Discord. Bots can moderate, play music, post announcements, and more.

Boost - A Nitro feature where members "boost" a server to unlock perks like better audio quality and custom invite backgrounds.

Category - A folder that groups related channels together in the sidebar.

Channel - A space for communication inside a server. Types include text, voice, video, forum, announcement, and stage channels.

Clyde - Discord's official bot/mascot. Clyde sends you system messages and DM confirmations.


D–F

DM (Direct Message) - A private conversation between two users, separate from any server.

Emoji (Custom) - Images uploaded to a server that members can use in messages. Nitro users can use custom emoji across all servers.

Forum Channel - A channel type that displays posts in a thread-list format, ideal for Q&A and organized discussions.

Friend Request - An invitation to connect privately with another Discord user.


G–I

Go Live - Discord's screen-sharing/streaming feature for voice channels. Available to all users.

Guild - The internal/developer term for a Discord server.

Integration - A connection between Discord and an external service (e.g., Twitch, YouTube, GitHub).

Invite Link - A URL that grants access to a private server. Can be set to expire or have a limited number of uses.


M–N

Member - Any user who has joined a server.

Mention (@) - Tagging a user or role to send them a notification. @everyone pings all members.

Mute - Silencing a user in a voice channel, or a channel so you stop receiving notifications.

Nitro - Discord's paid subscription with perks like animated avatars, bigger uploads, and server boosts.


O–R

Owner - The user who created a server. Has all permissions and can transfer ownership.

Permission - A setting that controls what a role or user can do in a channel or server.

PFP (Profile Picture) - Your avatar image on Discord.

Prefix - A character (like ! or /) typed before a bot command to trigger it.

Raid - A coordinated attack where many accounts join a server simultaneously to spam or cause disruption.

Role - A label assigned to members that defines their permissions and may change their name color.


S–T

Server - A community space on Discord with its own channels, roles, and members.

Slash Command - A command starting with / used to interact with bots in a standardized way.

Stage Channel - A voice channel with a speaker/audience format for hosting events, talks, or podcasts.

Sticker - Larger, more expressive images that can be sent in messages (similar to emoji but bigger).

Thread - A focused sub-conversation branching from a main channel message.

Timeout - A temporary restriction that prevents a user from sending messages or joining voice channels.


V–W

Vanity URL - A custom invite link like discord.gg/yourservername available to servers with enough boosts.

Verification Level - A server security setting that controls who can send messages (e.g., email-verified accounts only).

Voice Channel - A channel for real-time audio (and optionally video) conversations.

Webhook - An automated message sender that posts content to a channel from an external app or script.
