These are not fonts

Discord's markdown can bold a message, but it cannot bold a username, a nickname, a server name or a channel topic — none of those fields render markdown at all. So people reach for Unicode instead. The characters here are real, distinct code points from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block: 𝐁 is not a bold B, it is a separate character that happens to look like one.

That is why they work anywhere text works, with no formatting support required — and also why they come with real trade-offs.

The trade-offs, honestly

Search stops working. Discord's search matches characters, not appearances. A server named with script letters will not come up when somebody types its name normally, which is a real cost for a community trying to be found.

Screen readers struggle. Assistive software announces these as individual mathematical symbols rather than words, so a name written this way can be unreadable to members who rely on one.

A common middle ground: style the decorative parts — a tagline, a channel topic — and leave the server's actual name in plain text so it stays searchable.

Why some generators show boxes

Unicode had already encoded several of these letters as named mathematical constants before the block existed, so those positions are reserved and the letter lives elsewhere — script capital B is at U+212C, not where the pattern would put it. Generators that just add a fixed offset produce empty boxes for exactly those letters. Every gap is handled here, which is why 𝓑 and ℬ both come out as letters.
