LEGO recently announced its new Sagrada Família set, and it's massive. Priced at $799.99, it's officially the biggest LEGO set ever produced. And while the title of "biggest LEGO set" does seem like a fitting tribute to the legendary architect, Antonin Gaudí, I can't help but feel like it overlooks one key thing that makes the real version of the building so interesting.
It took 144 years for the Sagrada Família to be built in Barcelona, but you can build the plastic brick set in just a couple of days if you're determined enough. If ever there was an opportunity to release a build with multiple sets throughout the years, this seems like it would be it.
I visited Spain back in 2018 and had the chance to visit Gaudí's masterpiece while construction was still ongoing. I was in awe of the beautiful stained-glass and the tremendous Gothic pillars, but mostly I was enraptured by the story. Knowing that people had been working on building this modern-day wonder of the world for so long was like seeing an active portal through history. It's a concept that I think would really lend itself to a new kind of LEGO Architecture release cycle.
Don't get me wrong, I think the official Sagrada Família set looks great. But at $800, it's definitely not something I'm going to be able to afford any time soon. If LEGO would have decided to release the build in smaller, more affordable sections one at a time I would have definitely considered buying into such an endeavor. This type of release schedule for a set is pretty rare, but it's not unheard of. There's an ongoing LEGO Hogwarts Castle build that has been getting new releases since 2024. I recognize that there might not be as much interest in famous architecture as there is in Harry Potter, but I'd have loved to see LEGO go all in on building a piece of active history.
What's included in the biggest set ever?
At 12,060 pieces, the Sagrada Família firmly secures the crown as the biggest LEGO set ever, followed by the World Map and Eiffel Tower set. Based on the product images LEGO has provided for the set, the outside of the building looks to be the most detailed aspect of the whole build. While it can't be perfectly replicated in LEGO bricks, it's absolutely recognizable as the iconic Catholic church. Those same product images show off the stained-glass cathedral on the inside, but with far less detail. Still, it's enough to showcase Gaudi's intent for the windows to blend seamlessly with the cycle of the sun.
You can currently preorder the LEGO Sagrada Família set for $799.99 directly from the LEGO website. It's scheduled for release on November 1, 2026.
