The Halo Handover: Why Microsoft Gave Master Chief to Activision in the Latest Xbox Shakeup

🪖 The Halo Handover Is Official

Microsoft has just made one of the biggest changes to Halo's development history.

As part of Xbox's latest restructuring, Activision will develop the next Halo title through a new, purpose-built team. The team will operate separately from Activision's ongoing Call of Duty development.

Meanwhile, a smaller team at Halo Studios will remain focused on supporting existing Halo games and the wider community.

For a franchise that has been closely associated with Xbox since the original Xbox launched, the change is significant.

🔄 So, What Actually Changed?

This isn't Microsoft selling the Halo franchise to Activision.

Instead, Xbox is changing who develops the next main Halo game.

The new structure puts the next Halo project under Activision's development organization, while Halo Studios keeps a smaller team for existing games and community support.

Activision is also expanding its remit to include Rare and World's Edge, bringing more Xbox studios under fewer organizational groups.

🎯 Why Is Xbox Doing This?

Xbox says the goal is to operate with fewer business units, bring teams that already work closely together into the same groups and concentrate its publishing expertise.

The move is part of a much larger Xbox reset that began earlier this year.

Microsoft originally announced plans to reduce its Xbox workforce by approximately 3,200 roles during FY27, alongside changes to its studio portfolio and management structure.

The September restructuring added another 268 role eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios and Xbox Game Studios' management and central functions. Xbox says the overall restructuring is now roughly three-quarters complete.

🧩 What Happens to Halo Studios?

Halo Studios isn't simply disappearing.

Xbox says a small team will remain at Halo Studios to support the Halo community and games that are already available.

The development of the next Halo, however, is moving to Activision's new team.

Microsoft hasn't revealed the new team's size, the next game's official title or its release date yet.

🏢 Why Activision?

Activision already operates one of the industry's largest large-scale shooter organizations through Call of Duty.

But Xbox has specifically said that the new Halo team will be separate from the ongoing Call of Duty development and plans.

That means this isn't simply a case of the Call of Duty team being assigned Halo. Instead, Activision is being given responsibility for building a dedicated team around the franchise.

For Xbox, the broader idea appears to be consolidation: fewer organizational units, clearer responsibilities and more centralized publishing expertise.

🌊 Rare Is Moving Too

Halo isn't the only major Xbox franchise affected.

Rare and World's Edge are also moving under Activision's expanded remit.

That puts major franchises such as Sea of Thieves and Age of Empires within the same broader organizational group as the next Halo project.

Elsewhere, Xbox is making different changes.

Obsidian is moving under Bethesda, while Playground Games and Turn 10 are being brought together into one studio focused on the Forza and Fable franchises.

📉 The Bigger Xbox Reset

The Halo change makes more sense when viewed alongside the rest of Microsoft's restructuring.

Xbox has spent 2026 reducing its organizational complexity, cutting roles and changing how its studios are grouped.

The company says these changes are intended to create a more focused organization rather than simply expanding its number of studios and teams.

The July announcement described the broader restructuring as the most significant in Xbox's history and targeted approximately 3,200 role reductions throughout FY27.

👀 What Happens to the Next Halo?

For now, there are more questions than answers.

We don't know what the next Halo will be called, when it will launch or exactly what direction Activision's new team will take.

What we do know is that Master Chief's next major adventure will be developed under a very different structure from the one that produced previous Halo titles.

And for the first time, Activision will be directly responsible for building the next mainline Halo experience.

🎮 Final Take

Xbox isn't handing the Halo franchise away.

It's handing development of the next Halo game to a new Activision-led team while keeping a smaller Halo Studios group around existing games and the community.

Combined with Rare and World's Edge also moving under Activision, Obsidian moving under Bethesda and other studio consolidations, this is a major reshaping of how Xbox's first-party organization operates.

The real question now isn't whether Halo is still an Xbox franchise.

It's what Activision's version of Halo will actually look like.
