Nintendo's Veto: The Cancelled Ubisoft Spin-off That Would Have Starred Ganondorf

🗡️ The Zelda Game That Never Happened

Imagine a Zelda game where you don't play as Link.

Instead, you play as Ganondorf.

That is reportedly what Ubisoft Milan was working toward with a mysterious project internally known as Goliath.

The project never received a public announcement. According to a new Insider Gaming investigation, Ubisoft Milan developed a prototype for a Zelda spin-off that ultimately failed to receive Nintendo's approval.

And the story gets even stranger.

The project apparently didn't start with Ganondorf at all.

🧩 From a New Hero to Ganondorf

After Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, Ubisoft Milan was looking for its next collaboration with Nintendo.

Rather than simply making another Mario + Rabbids game, creative director Davide Soliani and a small team reportedly wanted to build something much bigger.

The initial concept was a Zelda spin-off featuring a completely new protagonist.

Nintendo reportedly liked the broader idea but asked Ubisoft Milan to replace that character with Ganondorf, one of the franchise's most recognizable villains.

That change transformed the project into something very different from a traditional Zelda adventure.

🎮 What Was Project Goliath?

Very little about the actual gameplay has been revealed.

The reporting confirms that Ubisoft Milan worked on a prototype, but it does not provide enough information to establish exactly how combat, exploration or progression would have worked.

What makes the project particularly interesting is the studio behind it.

Ubisoft Milan was responsible for Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, two tactical games that combined Nintendo characters with Ubisoft's Rabbids.

That history makes the idea of a Zelda tactical spin-off especially easy to imagine, but there is currently no confirmed information that Goliath would have used the exact Mario + Rabbids gameplay formula.

🏗️ Ubisoft Milan Built a Prototype

According to Insider Gaming, Soliani and a small team worked on the concept throughout the winter following the initial discussions.

By early 2023, Ubisoft Milan reportedly had what the team considered a strong pitch for Goliath.

The studio was then given until around the end of 2023 to produce a compelling prototype and get the project through its next approval stage.

That prototype would ultimately become the project's final major milestone.

❌ Nintendo Rejected the Prototype

In late November 2023, Nintendo reportedly rejected the prototype.

The reason remains unknown.

That distinction matters because there has been plenty of speculation about why the project was cancelled, but the original report does not establish a definitive explanation.

Nintendo has not publicly announced Goliath, and Ubisoft has declined to comment on rumors and speculation surrounding the project.

So for now, we know the prototype was rejected, but we don't know exactly what Nintendo disliked or why it decided not to continue.

🌟 What Could Have Made It Different?

The biggest change would have been the protagonist.

Ganondorf is usually positioned as Link and Zelda's main antagonist, so putting him at the center of an entire Zelda adventure would have been a major departure.

He has appeared as a playable character in Zelda spin-offs such as Hyrule Warriors, but a dedicated adventure built around him would still have represented a very different direction for the franchise.

The project also came from a team already experienced with adapting Nintendo characters into a different genre.

That combination made Goliath an unusually ambitious experiment.

🤝 The End of the Ubisoft-Nintendo Partnership?

The cancellation appears to have had consequences beyond Goliath itself.

After the project was rejected, Ubisoft Milan reportedly considered other Nintendo collaborations. Internal discussions allegedly included possibilities such as Star Fox or another Mario project.

However, conversations between Nintendo and Ubisoft reportedly began breaking down between late 2023 and early 2024.

The Ubisoft Milan team was subsequently split across other projects. Several key members, including Soliani, later left Ubisoft and founded Day 4 Night.

That means Goliath may have been more than just one cancelled prototype. It appears to have arrived near the end of a creative partnership that had produced the Mario + Rabbids series.

👀 The Game We'll Never Play

There is still a lot we don't know.

We haven't seen gameplay footage, a final story, a complete character roster or even a detailed description of how Ganondorf would have played.

What we do have is a report that Ubisoft Milan built a prototype for a Zelda spin-off after Nintendo reportedly pushed the project toward a Ganondorf-led concept.

Nintendo ultimately rejected it.

And now, one of the strangest hypothetical Zelda games imaginable exists only as a cancelled project called Goliath.

🎯 Final Take

The most fascinating part of the Goliath story isn't simply that Ubisoft once considered a Zelda game starring Ganondorf.

It's that the project reportedly came from the Mario + Rabbids team, began with an entirely different protagonist and evolved into a Ganondorf-led Zelda spin-off during its development.

The project never made it beyond the prototype stage, and Nintendo's exact reason for rejecting it remains unknown.

For now, Goliath is another reminder of just how many completely different versions of major game franchises can exist behind the scenes before players ever hear about them.
