Forza Horizon 6 on PS5: Xbox's Multi Platform Strategy Hits Top Gear

Forza Horizon 6 on PS5: Xbox's Multi Platform Strategy Hits Top Gear

For years, Forza Horizon has been one of the names most closely associated with Xbox.

That made Microsoft's latest confirmation far more significant than a normal platform announcement.

Forza Horizon 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 later in 2026.

The news is not entirely new. Xbox announced the PS5 version alongside the original game reveal in January. But after months of speculation about a possible delay into 2027, Playground Games has now reiterated that the PS5 version is still planned for later this year.

And that matters because Forza is not just another Xbox published game.

It is one of the franchises that helped define the identity of Microsoft's console.

Now, players on PlayStation will be able to explore Japan, race hundreds of cars and experience the same open world that launched on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

So what does Forza Horizon 6 on PS5 actually tell us about where Xbox is heading?

🏎️ Forza Is Crossing the Biggest Console Wall

The basic announcement is simple.

Forza Horizon 6 is coming to PS5 later this year.

The game originally launched on Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 19, 2026. Playground Games confirmed from the beginning that a PlayStation 5 version was planned for later in the year.

The game's setting makes the PS5 release particularly interesting.

Forza Horizon 6 takes players to Japan, with an open world featuring more than 550 cars according to Xbox's official game page.

The game combines traditional Horizon racing with exploration, car collecting, customization and a shared world.

Playground Games has also continued expanding the game after launch.

The September update introduced Drift Attack, a permanent activity where players can compete for drift points around the Shimanoyama Circuit, either alone, with a Convoy or alongside other players in the shared world.

For PS5 players, that means they are not simply getting an old Xbox game years later.

They are joining an actively supported Horizon experience.

🎮 Why the PS5 Version Matters So Much

Xbox has released games on competing platforms before.

That part is no longer surprising.

In 2024, Microsoft announced that Grounded, Sea of Thieves, Pentiment and Hi Fi RUSH were coming to Nintendo Switch and Sony platforms. Xbox explicitly described the strategy as bringing games to more players and more devices.

But Forza is different.

Forza Horizon has historically been one of the clearest examples of an Xbox ecosystem franchise.

Putting it on PlayStation means Microsoft's multi platform approach is reaching deeper into its traditional first party catalogue.

The progression is easy to see:

Xbox franchise → PC release → broader console availability → PlayStation audience

That does not mean Xbox consoles suddenly stop mattering.

It means Microsoft is increasingly separating the idea of Xbox as a platform from the idea of Xbox as a single piece of hardware.

🌎 Xbox Wants the Game, Not Just the Console

This is where Microsoft's own messaging becomes important.

In April 2026, Xbox leadership described a future where Xbox becomes a platform connecting players across console, PC, mobile and cloud.

The company also said it would reevaluate its approach to exclusivity and windowing while focusing on reaching players across devices.

That makes Forza Horizon 6 feel less like an isolated experiment.

It fits into a much larger strategy.

The Xbox business can potentially benefit from a game even when the player is not sitting in front of an Xbox console.

A PlayStation player buying Forza is still entering Microsoft's gaming ecosystem.

A player discovering the franchise on PS5 could later become interested in Xbox services, PC gaming, Game Pass or other Microsoft franchises.

That is a very different philosophy from the traditional console war.

📈 The Numbers Behind the Strategy

There is also a straightforward business reason for expanding the audience.

A console exclusive has a natural ceiling.

If a game is available on Xbox and PC, its potential audience is already much larger than an Xbox only release.

Adding PlayStation creates another enormous player base without requiring Microsoft to sell that player an Xbox console first.

The strategy therefore changes the question.

Instead of asking:

How many Xbox consoles can this game sell?

Microsoft can ask:

How many players can this franchise reach?

That distinction is becoming increasingly important as the gaming industry moves toward subscriptions, cross platform multiplayer and persistent online communities.

Xbox itself said in April that its new north star would be daily active players, while describing its goal as building a global platform that connects players across devices.

Forza Horizon 6 is almost a perfect example of that philosophy.

🏁 But Xbox Is Not Abandoning Exclusives

This is where the story gets more complicated.

It would be easy to look at Forza Horizon 6 arriving on PS5 and conclude that Xbox has completely abandoned console exclusivity.

Microsoft's own announcements do not support that interpretation.

At the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft specifically announced that Gears of War: E Day and Clockwork Revolution would remain Xbox console exclusives. Xbox also said that previously announced multi platform games would continue following their existing plans.

So the current strategy appears more selective.

Some games remain tied to Xbox hardware.

Other franchises are being expanded across platforms.

That creates a two track approach:

Xbox ApproachExample
Xbox console exclusiveGears of War: E Day
Xbox ecosystem releaseForza Horizon 6
Multi platform first party gameSea of Thieves
Cross device strategyXbox, PC, cloud

The interesting question is no longer whether Xbox has exclusives.

It is which games Microsoft believes should remain exclusive and which games benefit more from reaching a larger audience.

🕹️ Forza Horizon 6 Could Be the Perfect Test Case

Forza Horizon might actually be one of the safest franchises for this experiment.

Unlike a competitive shooter built around a specific platform ecosystem, Horizon is fundamentally about the experience.

Drive.

Explore.

Collect cars.

Build your garage.

Race friends.

Discover the map.

That experience does not fundamentally depend on owning an Xbox.

And because the game already exists on PC, Microsoft's development pipeline is already built around supporting hardware outside the Xbox console.

The PS5 version therefore expands the audience without changing the fundamental identity of the game.

🔥 The Timing Is Also Interesting

Forza Horizon 6 launched on Xbox and PC in May.

Several months later, Playground Games is still adding new content.

The September British Automotive update added new cars, events and the permanent Drift Attack feature, while the developer again confirmed that the PS5 release is coming later in 2026.

There is still no specific PS5 release date.

The current official wording remains simply later this year.

That distinction matters because earlier reports had raised the possibility of the PS5 version slipping into 2027. Playground Games' September update pushed back against that uncertainty by reaffirming the 2026 window.

PlayStation players can already wishlist the game through the PlayStation Store.

🌐 From Sea of Thieves to Forza

Forza is also not the first major Xbox franchise to make the jump.

Sea of Thieves became one of Microsoft's most visible examples of an Xbox multiplayer game expanding onto PlayStation.

Grounded followed with cross platform support across Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC. Xbox highlighted the ability to bring larger communities together rather than keeping those players separated by hardware.

Forza Horizon 6 takes that concept into another category.

It is one of Microsoft's biggest racing franchises.

That makes its arrival on PS5 much more symbolic.

The PlayStation audience is no longer just getting smaller experimental Xbox projects.

It is getting one of the company's flagship gaming brands.

🧠 What This Means for Xbox

The biggest takeaway is not that Xbox has stopped caring about hardware.

Microsoft is still developing new Xbox hardware, including Project Helix, and has described console as the foundation of its gaming strategy.

Instead, Xbox increasingly appears to be treating hardware as one part of a much larger ecosystem.

That ecosystem includes:

Xbox Console → PC → Cloud → Handhelds → Services → Other Consoles

Forza Horizon 6 fits neatly into that structure.

The Xbox console can remain the primary home for the franchise while Microsoft simultaneously allows millions of PlayStation players to experience it.

That is a very different model from the traditional idea that an Xbox game must sell an Xbox.

🏆 The Forza Horizon 6 Experiment

There is still one major question.

Will this actually work?

That cannot be answered yet.

The PS5 version has not launched, and there is no public sales data from the upcoming release to measure its impact.

But the strategic experiment is obvious.

Microsoft is testing how much value a major first party franchise can generate when the company prioritizes players and engagement across platforms rather than restricting every major release to Xbox hardware.

Forza Horizon 6 is therefore more than another racing game arriving on another console.

It is a useful snapshot of where Xbox is heading.

🚗 The Road Ahead

Forza Horizon 6 launching on PS5 would have sounded almost impossible during the Xbox One era.

Now it is officially planned.

The game already launched on Xbox Series X|S and PC, has received ongoing content updates and is expected to reach PlayStation 5 later in 2026.

At the same time, Microsoft is still keeping selected games exclusive.

That makes the current Xbox strategy less about choosing between exclusive and multi platform and more about deciding which model makes sense for each franchise.

Forza Horizon 6 may be one of the clearest examples yet.

Xbox built the road. PC expanded it. Now PlayStation is getting an entrance ramp.

And if the PS5 version performs well, the biggest question may no longer be whether Xbox will bring more games to competing platforms.

It may be which franchise gets the green light next.
