Discord Trending Games Update: Genre Filters Turn the App Into an Indie Discovery Engine

Discord's Trending Games Pivot: How the App Is Becoming an Indie Discovery Engine

Discord used to be where you talked about games. Now it wants to be where you find them.

The September 2026 update lets you filter the Trending Games page by entire genres, including indie and FPS. Next to it, a revamped Town Hall gives the community one place to follow product news and collabs.

This article covers the Discord Trending Games genre filter, how it works, what the Town Hall revamp adds, and where the "indie discovery engine" idea holds up and where it needs a caveat.

🔥 Main Story: Discord Trending Games Now Filters by Genre

Discord's September 25, 2026 changelog says the Trending Games page now lets you filter by genre. You can click a genre name to see the top trending games in that category each week, such as indie or FPS.

Discord pitches it as a way to find something fresh to play with friends. That is a clear shift from a single ranked list to a browsable discovery tool.

The key fact: the page already carries a genre menu, including Indie, RPG, Shooter, Survival, Horror, Sandbox and many more.

🎮 What Happened

Trending Games has been building for months. In July, Discord's Town Hall explained that the page tracks the games with the biggest jumps in players each week and ranks them, with a breakdown by genre.

The September changelog then put genre filtering up front. It also announced a revamped Town Hall, which Discord says is the place for product updates, collabs and running experiments.

🧭 Navigation: Main Story → What Happened → Why It Matters → Key Details → Deeper Breakdown → Comparison → Creator Note → What Happens Next

🎬 Discovery flow: 🎮 Open Trending Games → 🏷️ Pick a genre → 🔎 Browse the weekly list → 👥 Join the community → 🔔 Follow updates in Town Hall

🧠 Why It Matters

Discovery is a hard problem for smaller games. A flat list rewards whatever is biggest, while a genre list lets a rising indie title compete with its own peers.

Discord's ranking logic helps here. Because the page leans on growth in players rather than raw size, a small game with a sudden surge can show up.

⚠️ Important: "Indie discovery engine" is our editorial framing, not Discord's wording. The changelog only says you can browse trending indie or FPS games by genre.

🔍 Deeper Breakdown

How the Genre Filter Works

The Trending Games page has a row of genre tabs. Archived weekly pages show the full list, which includes Adventure, Indie, Simulation, RPG, Shooter, Fantasy, Open World, Strategy, Sci-Fi, Survival, Horror, FPS, MMO, Story Rich, Crafting, Tactical, Sports and Sandbox.

That is 18 genres plus an "All" view. Each genre gets its own weekly page, such as the Indie category page.

💡 Note: Some archived weekly genre pages from spring 2026 show "no games trending," so a genre can come up empty in a given week. We could not verify the current weekly lists.

What the Town Hall Revamp Adds

Discord says it revamped Town Hall, also nicknamed the Discord Discord, so people can get product updates, learn about collabs and see experiments. Discord's official Town Hall server already posts the monthly changelog, with the September edition leading on echo cancellation.

The server describes itself as a community run by Discord for Discord users. In one recent snapshot it showed around 487,000 members.

A second change shapes how the revamp works. Discord said in a Town Hall post that it would stop using @everyone pings and move to opt in roles, so you only get pinged for what you choose.

What We Know

• Confirmed: Trending Games can be filtered by genre, Town Hall has been revamped for updates, collabs and experiments, and the genre menu covers 18 genres.
• Reported: genre breakdowns appeared in weekly Town Hall posts as early as July.
• Not confirmed: whether the filter gives indie titles a measurable boost, how Discord defines "indie," and how many collabs are planned.

What Could Happen Next

This section is speculation. Discord could add more genres or let servers connect to trending lists.

It could also use Town Hall to preview experiments with the Trending Games page. None of that has been announced.

Final Takeaway

This update is quieter than a flashy feature drop, but it points in a clear direction. Discord is investing in the step before you start playing, which is deciding what to play.

Genre filters give smaller games a fairer shot, and Town Hall gives the community a place to hear about it. Whether it becomes a true indie discovery engine depends on how the weekly lists behave over time.

The best discovery tool is the one that makes your next favorite game feel like a friend's recommendation.
