Avengers: Doomsday & Marvel’s New X-Men Movie: Everything We Know
The future of Marvel just became a lot clearer.
Avengers: Doomsday is preparing to bring together the Avengers, Fantastic Four and legendary X-Men characters for a massive battle involving Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
Then Marvel is doing something fans have been waiting years to see.
The X-Men are getting their own MCU movie.
At D23 2026, Marvel Studios officially revealed the main cast of its new X-Men movie, including Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. The film is scheduled for May 2028. (Marvel)
But before the new generation takes over, some familiar mutants have unfinished business.

Robert Downey Jr. Is Doctor Doom
Yes, Iron Man himself is returning to the MCU.
But Robert Downey Jr. isn't returning as Tony Stark.
He's playing:
Victor von Doom.
Doctor Doom is one of the biggest villains in Marvel history.
He's traditionally the ruler of the fictional nation of Latveria, one of Reed Richards' greatest enemies and a character who combines genius-level intelligence with advanced technology and magic.
That makes Doom a very different threat from Thanos.
Thanos wanted the Infinity Stones.
Doom can potentially become a threat without needing them.
And having the actor who played the MCU's greatest hero return as one of Marvel's greatest villains makes the situation even more interesting.
The Avengers: Doomsday Cast Is HUGE
Doomsday isn't simply another Avengers movie.
Marvel is bringing together characters from almost every corner of its cinematic universe.
That includes the Avengers, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, Wakanda and the X-Men.
Among the previously announced cast are:
| Actor | Character |
|---|---|
| Robert Downey Jr. | Doctor Doom |
| Chris Hemsworth | Thor |
| Anthony Mackie | Captain America |
| Sebastian Stan | Bucky Barnes |
| Paul Rudd | Ant-Man |
| Letitia Wright | Shuri / Black Panther |
| Simu Liu | Shang-Chi |
| Florence Pugh | Yelena Belova |
| Tom Hiddleston | Loki |
| Pedro Pascal | Reed Richards |
| Vanessa Kirby | Sue Storm |
| Joseph Quinn | Johnny Storm |
| Ebon Moss-Bachrach | Ben Grimm |
| Patrick Stewart | Professor X |
| Ian McKellen | Magneto |
| James Marsden | Cyclops |
| Kelsey Grammer | Beast |
| Rebecca Romijn | Mystique |
| Alan Cumming | Nightcrawler |
| Channing Tatum | Gambit |
Marvel first revealed much of the cast through its enormous chair-based announcement when production began. (Marvel)
The Original X-Men Are Back
This might be the most exciting part for longtime Marvel fans.
Before Marvel introduces its new X-Men team, several stars from the classic movies are returning.
Patrick Stewart is back as Professor X.
Ian McKellen is back as Magneto.
James Marsden is back as Cyclops.
Kelsey Grammer is back as Beast.
Rebecca Romijn is back as Mystique.
Alan Cumming is back as Nightcrawler.
And Channing Tatum's Gambit is joining them.
For fans who grew up watching the original X-Men movies, Doomsday could effectively become another huge X-Men movie hidden inside an Avengers crossover.
Avengers + Fantastic Four + X-Men
Think about how ridiculous this crossover actually is.
We could have:
Thor
Captain America
Loki
Shang-Chi
Black Panther
The Fantastic Four
Professor X
Magneto
Cyclops
Gambit
Nightcrawler
Beast
and many more characters appearing in the same movie.
And they're all being brought together around Doctor Doom.
This is the type of crossover Marvel previously reserved for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
What Will Avengers: Doomsday Be About?
Marvel is still keeping important parts of the story secret.
That means any detailed plot descriptions circulating online should be treated carefully unless Marvel confirms them.
What we do know is that Doctor Doom will be central to the story and that characters from several different Marvel teams and universes are involved.
D23 2026 also brought another look at the movie, with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell participating in Marvel's presentation of new Doomsday material. (Marvel)
That makes the multiverse an obvious part of the discussion.
But exactly how these different heroes meet is something Marvel clearly wants audiences to discover in the movie.
Then Comes Marvel’s NEW X-Men
Doomsday isn't the end of Marvel's mutant plans.
It's the beginning.
At D23 on August 14, 2026, Marvel finally revealed the actors who will lead the MCU's first dedicated X-Men movie.
The film arrives in:
May 2028
This isn't simply another appearance from the Fox-era characters.
Marvel is introducing a new generation of X-Men.
The New MCU X-Men Cast
Marvel's currently announced lineup includes:
| Character | Actor |
|---|---|
| 🔴 Jean Grey | Sadie Sink |
| 🔵 Cyclops | Kit Connor |
| 🧠 Professor X | Christopher Abbott |
| 🟢 Rogue | Inde Navarrette |
| 🌩️ Storm | Maya Boyd |
| 🧬 Mister Sinister | Adam Driver |
Marvel officially announced the cast at D23, and Reuters independently reported the same lineup. (Marvel)
This gives us our clearest idea yet of what the MCU's mutant team will look like.
Sadie Sink Is Jean Grey
One of the biggest announcements is Sadie Sink as Jean Grey.
Jean isn't simply another member of the X-Men.
She's historically one of the team's most powerful and important characters.
Jean possesses incredible telepathic and telekinetic abilities, and her connection with the Phoenix Force has produced some of the biggest storylines in X-Men history.
Famke Janssen originally played Jean Grey in the early X-Men movies.
Sophie Turner later played a younger version.
Now the role belongs to Sadie Sink.
And putting Jean in Marvel's initial cast announcement strongly suggests she's going to be important to this new version of the team.
Kit Connor Is Cyclops
Kit Connor is the MCU's new Scott Summers.
Better known as Cyclops.
Cyclops is sometimes misunderstood by casual movie audiences as simply "the guy who shoots lasers from his eyes."
He's much more important than that.
In the comics, Cyclops is one of the X-Men's greatest leaders.
His optic blasts are incredibly powerful, forcing him to use his iconic ruby-quartz visor to control them.
His relationship with Jean Grey is also one of Marvel's longest-running mutant relationships.
A younger Scott and Jean could potentially become the emotional centre of the MCU's X-Men franchise.
Adam Driver Is Mister Sinister
Marvel may have made its most interesting decision with the villain.
Adam Driver is playing Mister Sinister. (Reuters)
Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mister Sinister, is obsessed with genetics and mutation.
That makes him an excellent villain for a movie introducing mutants properly into the MCU.
And importantly, he's not Magneto.
Marvel has already explored Professor X vs Magneto repeatedly through the previous movies.
Starting the reboot with Mister Sinister gives audiences something different.
Christopher Abbott Is Professor X
Christopher Abbott will become the MCU's new Charles Xavier.
That's a difficult role to inherit.
Patrick Stewart made Professor X iconic in the original movies.
James McAvoy then played the younger Xavier throughout the prequel series.
Abbott now becomes the third major live-action Professor X.
And the timing is particularly interesting.
Patrick Stewart will appear as Professor X in Doomsday.
Then Christopher Abbott becomes Professor X for Marvel's new generation.
That makes the next few years look increasingly like a transition between two X-Men universes.
Storm Returns
Maya Boyd will play Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm.
Storm can manipulate weather, including lightning, wind, rain and atmospheric conditions.
But she's also one of Marvel's most important mutant leaders.
At different points in the comics, Storm has led the X-Men and even become Queen of Wakanda through her marriage to Black Panther.
That history gives Marvel plenty of opportunities to connect the X-Men with the wider MCU.
Rogue Joins the Team
Inde Navarrette is the new Rogue.
Rogue has one of the most unusual powers among the X-Men.
Physical contact allows her to absorb another person's memories, energy and abilities.
That power also makes ordinary physical relationships incredibly difficult.
It's one reason Rogue has historically been such an interesting character.
And naturally, her inclusion has already led fans to ask one question:
Where is Gambit?
Marvel hasn't announced the new MCU version of Gambit yet.
Channing Tatum's version is separately part of the current multiverse storyline.
Old X-Men vs New MCU X-Men
This is where Marvel's plan becomes especially interesting.
| Character | Doomsday / Classic X-Men | New MCU X-Men |
|---|---|---|
| Professor X | Patrick Stewart | Christopher Abbott |
| Cyclops | James Marsden | Kit Connor |
| Magneto | Ian McKellen | TBA |
| Jean Grey | Previous Fox versions | Sadie Sink |
| Storm | Previous Fox versions | Maya Boyd |
| Rogue | Previous Fox versions | Inde Navarrette |
| Beast | Kelsey Grammer | TBA |
| Nightcrawler | Alan Cumming | TBA |
| Mister Sinister | - | Adam Driver |
Marvel effectively has two generations of X-Men active around the end of the Multiverse Saga.
And that probably isn't a coincidence.
Secret Wars Could Change Everything
After Doomsday comes:
Avengers: Secret Wars
The movie is scheduled for December 17, 2027.
Then the new X-Men arrive in May 2028.
Look at that release order:
Avengers: Doomsday
⬇️
Avengers: Secret Wars
⬇️
X-Men
That sequence is extremely interesting.
In Marvel Comics, Secret Wars stories involve enormous changes to reality and different universes colliding.
That has naturally created a popular theory:
Could Secret Wars create the MCU where Marvel's new X-Men exist?
Marvel hasn't confirmed that.
So treat it as a theory.
But putting the X-Men reboot directly after Secret Wars makes the possibility difficult to ignore.
Where Is Wolverine?
There's one mutant everyone immediately looks for whenever an X-Men cast is announced.
Wolverine.
Marvel hasn't announced who will play the MCU's new Wolverine in the 2028 X-Men movie.
That means any casting rumours should currently be treated as exactly that:
rumours.
After Hugh Jackman's huge return in Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel has an extremely difficult casting decision ahead.
Whoever eventually takes over those claws will immediately face comparisons with Jackman.
Marvel may therefore be deliberately taking its time.
Why Mister Sinister Could Be Perfect for the First Movie
Starting with Mister Sinister instead of Magneto gives Marvel an opportunity to tell a very different X-Men story.
Sinister is obsessed with mutant DNA.
Imagine mutants beginning to become more visible across the MCU.
Humans don't fully understand them.
Governments don't understand them.
Scientists don't understand them.
But Nathaniel Essex does.
And he wants to experiment on them.
That gives Professor X an immediate reason to bring young mutants together.
Not simply to create a superhero team.
But to protect them.
Again, Marvel hasn't revealed the full plot, but Mister Sinister's inclusion creates plenty of possibilities.
What Could the New X-Men Look Like?
Marvel's announced lineup already gives us the foundation:
Professor X
Cyclops
Jean Grey
Storm
Rogue
Potentially more characters yet to be revealed.
Then:
Mister Sinister as the major threat.
It feels much closer to a traditional X-Men team than simply inserting individual mutants into unrelated MCU projects.

| Movie | Release |
|---|---|
| Avengers: Doomsday | December 18, 2026 |
| Avengers: Secret Wars | December 17, 2027 |

If Marvel connects these stories as heavily as many fans expect, Doomsday and Secret Wars could become essential viewing before X-Men.
